Banggai spat out a dead baby ... normal?

My male banggai has been holding for 19 days. Yesterday, I saw him spit out a dead baby. It looked like it was a "wiggler." He's still holding something, though. It's hard to see inside his mouth, but I think I saw little black and white babies in there :D

I'm assuming this is normal, based on other fish I've kept where there are occasional deaths of wigglers/fry. It's his third time holding, and he's gone longer than the first two times. Any advice?

my bangaii ususlly hold between 30 and 45 fry when it gets to be about day 20 I usually scoop him out and put him in a separate 10G tank until he spits them all out, then I return him to the main tank

Thanks for the info. He dropped the fry last week, but unfortunately it was before we could get him out of the main tank. He's holding again already. I did my best to feed him up in the few short days he was eating.

I think I'll try to get him out of the tank into another tank so we can get the fry. I guess I'll wait until about day 20 to try to get him out.

I know this is off topic, but it seems like there are quite a few bangaii knowledgable ppl in here...are they good community fish?? Would they be peaceful with a couple pair of neon gobies? And what's the best way to pair them?

bangaii man: no fry yet :( This was their third spawn, and we messed up. We're going to try to get him out around day 20. I'm planning on feeding baby brine shrimp.

d9sccr: Yes, they're pretty good community fish. I wouldn't put them in a nano tank, though. Our LFS picked out a male and female for us, but most people buy a group, wait for a pair to form, then remove those that aren't part of the pair.

okay...i have a 20L that i'm going to try and breed neons in, but i would like to try some bangaiis too..

from my experiences I have only been able to feed them freshly hatched baby brine shrimp (bbs). I've tried the frozen bbs from day one with a batch of fry, and those little suckers wouldn't eat it, they would put it in their mouth then spit it out.

d9sccr: I also think they are good community fish i've never seen them bother anyone else. I had 5 in my 180G, but I can't tell male vs. female except when he has a mouthfull of eggs

Our LFS managed to pick out a pair for us, from separate tanks. The lady says she believes the females have a more gray face, and in males it is more black (this is from looking at the fish head on). While I've never read of this being a means of sexing them, she did manage to pick out a male and female for us. Of course, we asked for a pair with her "best guess," they weren't sold to us as a mated pair.
