17 banggaii's if I counted right. Last night I had to force dad to spit them out since they were 29-32 days in the mouth. They are in the fuge now and eating the pods.

Very cool. Picking up some of these guys today from my lfs. Are they relatively easy to breed?

Thanks. Since this is my first time I will let you know ;) Seriously though from what I heard these are one of the easier fish to breed. I picked up 5 banggaii's at a LFS 2 weeks before thanksgiving and already have my first batch . The fry will be raised in my 75 gallon fuge which is full of small pods for them to feed on. I have been watching them feed this morning so I am hopeful some will make it to maturity. I have been told if they make it past week 4 you are good to go.

How large are they? Like 1/2 inch?
Pretty close but maybe more like 3/8.... Not sure what size they are supposed to be when 1st born. I am a bit surprised the Male kept them for so long until I forced them out. Hopefully this doesnt mean I did it too soon. They seem to be eating well so maybe not. Time will tell.

This is a lot of fun though. My kids never paid much attention to the tank until now and they cant keep their eyes off those little buggers. They sure are cute.

They look about the same size as mine when I had to strip my male. They also double in size each week for the first four. Pretty amazing to see them grow that fast.

BTW, I counted 18.

Thanks John. Since this was my first time I wasnt sure if I popped them out at the right time. Double in size the first week ? wow. This should be interesting. My kids and I are having fun watching the little suckers.

Fantastic!
Thanks ! this is new territory

Here are some pics taken today 72 hrs old. Hard to get a count since they get lost in the 75 gal fuge, but these are some of them. They are eating mostly the pods in the fuge but I fed them newly hatched baby brine shrimp yesterday.

Go back and read the last few pages of the Peeping Banggai Fry thread. I went from 19 to only one remaining. Looking back aggression was my biggest problem. With your tank size that shouldn't be an issue.

will do.So far I have not noticed any aggression but sounds like there will be. Like you say hopefully my tank size will eliminate/reduce that issue.

I have noticed already there is a social structure developing. When I first introduced them into the fuge they stayed together in one corner. After several hours they divided into two groups. Now I have two groups and one "lone Ranger" .

10 days old and still kickin !

As things got busy this past week I did not do much with the babies, and the fish tank for that matter. Saturday however I did notice my once plentiful pod population was vertually gone. I was a bit surprised since these were just 18 tiny cardinal babies in a 75 gallon fuge that was once teaming with pods so much you could see "clouds" of them in the water column. I guess I underestimated how much these suckers could eat.

I have since added a bag of live pods in the fuge and dosing with phyto to hopefully get them to reproduce. I also have a batch of baby brine shrimp that should be ready to eat by tomorrow. The thing I am doing now ( too hopefully hold them over ) is target feeding them cyclopeze, and they seem to be eating it well. I figure this is a good sign that they are healthy or a bad sign that they are starved to death. See for yourself in the attached video during one of the feedings.

I also noticed they dont like the dark, and when the fuge lights go out they all swim over to the one corner of the tank that gets ambient light from my DT. This makes it easy to feed when the lights come on since they are all in one place. They have since gotten familiar to the routine and so now whenever I come in the go over to the corner expecting lunch.

last count today I saw 14 out of the 18 original ones. There could be a few more alive and I just missed them in there.

Have you noticed any display of aggression or new developments within the social structure since this post?

So, have they grown a lot?

They are 5/8 inch now up from 3/8 in the beginning. So almost doubled in size.

I have not observed any aggression yet but then again with the large tank there is a lot going on that I dont see. I have noticed after the lights are they separate into two groups, and each group goes to the same spot in the tank. One in a corner and the other group in the middle of the tank behind a rock. Once lights go out they all group together in the other corner where they get ambient light from the display. As soon as lights go on they go back to there spots. I imagine aggression will come eventually and they may scatter and find other hiding spots in the tank, of which there are plenty.
I think the large tank is great for keeping aggression to a minimum, the downside is keeping them fed without wasting 90% of the food. So far so good.

I just went back and looked, aggression in my group started around day 19/20.

Thanks for checking, John. I will watch in a few more days to see if anything suspicious starts. Worse case I have a large sump with a fuge section I can put a few down there if I have to.

Almost a double in size in what, a week and a half!? That's even faster than octopus!

and they eat more too !

Thats the hardest part right now is keeping them fed. They mowed through all the pods in my fuge in a week. Fortunately they are eating frozen cyclopeze and I throw in some baby brine every few days when a batch is ready. I am thinking of getting another hatchery so I can give BBS every day.

The last few days I have noticed the little guys dont want to cooperate. We had a good thing going where they would all come to the corner just after lights came on around 530pm and I would feed them. Lately they have stayed in there hiding spots even during feeding. I started using my target feeder to get the food down to where they are. Seems to be working so far. I think next batch I am going to try a smaller breeder tank setup. It would make feeding them a lot easier.

17 days old video of 7 fry eating baby brine. There is another group of six but they are hiding behind colerpa and wont come out. I saw another loner swimming about so I have 14 still. Havent seen any aggression aside from an occasional nip yet but from what John says that will some in the next few days. I am still feeding frozen cyclopeze and live baby brine, but figure the next week or so will have to find something else. Any suggestions welcome .
