Bare bones build 50gal. IM Lagoon.

I would like to offer a brief introduction to this build.

I wanted to study marine biology in high school. I was very good at most sciences. I began a build with my father when I was in high school which started at a dream 180gal. Setup, but ended up being a 65 display, a 10 gallon tub for a fuge, and a 29gal. tall for a clown and an anemone. This all fed into a 20gal sump, scant equipment, yada yada yada... Long story short, it was essentially built to fail quickly. I ended up studying music instead. Now I'm a young artist who works very hard, and makes just enough to start slowly gathering things and gear in my reefer hoard! *cue the Wagner*

This brings us to this system. The equipment available now allows one to keep an extremely stable environment while not spending too much. So I am back in. I only want to spend money where it counts, I am taking my time, and i am doing a lot of diy. I have only reached this point after months and months of careful purchases and planning. I've changed my lighting design about 20 times until I came up with the final. I am only a month or two from my first saltwater set up and cycling time.

My plan is to post updates on here as I work through the process. I end up having a few questions that I just can't seem to find answers for through most available sources. Also I want a place where people may appreciate some pics of the set up and it's inhabitants.

My philosophy is pretty clear: I want this tank to be able to produce conditions where corals and other animals, and plants can thrive in a form factor that is simple, and extremely utilitarian, and diy. I want to grow a sps dominant mixed reef. Things such as quality tank, and quality essential gear construction is absolutely necessary to ensure a healthy system. But things such as a fancy stand, and 800+ bones for a controller just doesn't cut it right now (though I may get a cheaper controller in the future).

Anywho, I hope you enjoy my tank thread. I think it's kind of a neat project, a great distraction from the rat race, and yet another completely awesome demonstration of art meeting science, meeting mother nature.

Tank: IM 50gal lagoon

Fuge: standard 20 long I drilled for an overflow which goes directly into the main display.

I have the IM skimmer and media reactor for mid-sized tanks.

My lighting for the main tank is 2x 24" t5 ho (4 lamps total) lights slightly angled inward, and I plan on getting a hydra 26 HD in the middle of the t5s. The fuge will get a cheaper led fixture for now. I may upgrade later.. I plan on growing a mangrove at some point. I haven't given much thought to lighting periods yet.

I think the two return pumps add up to around 700 gph through the sump.

I'll have two of the 600 gph coralias for added flow (have one already). Not sure if that's enough. I want one on constantly, and one to alternate.

On top of that I have various other necessary equipment for water changes, testing, and the various other tasks that come along with the hobby.

I still need to get a few things before I am ready for aquascaping and cycling, but I am close enough to start this topic.

Pics are coming very soon.
Thanks
LB

Did a lot this weekend:
Got salt water in the system
Got first round of rock
Aquascaped main tank
Got skimmer and media reactor (with carbon and gfo mix) up and running

I'll just be running lights a couple hours a day. I also grabbed some flake food to do some phantom feedings. I have a great lfs, and they have this awesome pre cured rock for a very decent price.

I think I will be getting a pair of clowns in the near future to help with the cycling process (and honestly to feed my small sredd on impatience). Any thoughts about this would be welcomed wholeheartedly! Thanks :)

Did a lot this weekend:
-Got salt water in the system
-Picked up the first round of live rock
-started cycling the tank
-got the skimmer and the media reactor (with carbon and gfo mix) up and running
-started phantom feedings with a tiny bit of flake food

Thinking about getting a pair of clowns for in a little while to help the cycle. Is that a good idea?

Here's a couple pics of the Aquascape in the main tank.

Been progressing. Lots of coraline algae growth. Got a gobie... he died. Had some algae growth. Took care of it. Have a solid maintenance schedule now. And the tank has been settling out, and stabilizing. I'll post more when I get more time. A few months ago, I got a small colony of micro zoas, and a star polyp colony which hasn't done so well. I now have a clownfish who has been doing very well. I also added a bta a while back... I may let him go into the fuge.. he has never ceased moving, and has split twice already. Anyway, today, I got two frags from the bargain bin at the local fish store. A birds nest, and a monti. Both frags.

An update on the frags. I still have them on their plugs. Ironically, the birds nest has looked rather meh... while the Monti has started to grow and completely changed color to bright green with red polyps. Great deal for $15.

Also, today the damn pump on the media reactor I got from innovative marine went up. I'm going to see if I can repair this issue. I've been cleaning them regularly, and I think it might be a buildup in the turn shaft on the little pump. But this may just end in a trip to the lfs later this week. Until then I just have the media in a bag in the overflow. I only noticed this because the algae seemed to be building up faster than normal.

MARCH 15TH UPDATE
Got some new corals this week. I've been doing a lot more maintenance lately. It's about time for me to go throigh, and clean all the pumps. I should really just get new pumps, and have these ones as backups.

In some more exciting news, I went to the new England frag farmer's market. It was awesome. Drove 4 hours to get there. Spent about 40 minutes total inside. And told my husband it was time to leave. Because I didn't want to get too many things and spend too much money.
I bought:
A green slimer
Blue stag
Purple stylophora
An ora birdsnest
A neat zoa frag red and yellow

All seem to be happy. They have been in there since Saturday, and they are hungrily extending their polyps.. so I need to get some actual coral food. Asap!
