Bare bottoms tanks

We'll my tank is about 3 months old now currently with some sps.
For some reason I can't been to get the water crystal clear
I'm running carbon bio pellets and gfo
Also only have to clowns and a sailfin tank
My tank is 100gallon with a 40 gallon of sump volume
Running a vertex omega 150.
Also just added some filter media in betweent the baffles.
I've read the tank could be shedding still?!!! What ever that means
It was started with dry rock witch was cleaned with bleach and vinogar and the. Muratic acid the. Cleaned again with water and dried for several weeks
All phos ammonia nitrate and nitrite are at zero

It is pretty common to see cloudy BB tanks. The skimmer is not efficient enough to get all of the particles in the water - sound better on paper than in practice. Granulated carbon will help, but still not very efficient. Try some filter socks.

Why are you running bio pellets and GFO on a new tank? If you do get this thing up and running, you will be starving your SPS. Either would work, but neither might be necessary. The coral need to eat something. What was your plan here?

I have never heard of tank shedding. Dry rock can release dead organics for a long time, but I doubt that there would be sufficient quantity to cloud water.

i run a pretty clean and clear BB. i use filter socks, passive carbon, uv, gfo, and went with a cones skimmer that seems to be doing some pretty hefty work. i do 11-13% water changes every week. I attribute the clearness to filter socks, carbon, gfo, and the skimmer. I try to run wet.

i also try not to overfeed, but it's hard to when everything needs something.

what is your mag, alk, and calc? you haven't described the look of the water yet besides not being crystal clear.

Thanks will be

I've always ran bio pellets and gfo figured I have everything why not do it again i am going to be adding more fish soon and start heavey feeding
I also read if your gonna do pellets start from the beginning

Maybe I will take my gfo out and only run it when needed if it ever does

Any one else with some tips on barebottom tanks

Bare bottom has nothing to do with cloudy tanks. My BB tank is clear, was never cloudy. Yu may have a bacterial bloom associated with bio pellets or something else. I kind of agree with the gfo and bio pellets being held off on a new tank. These things should be run for a purpose, not just because. If you have elevated nutrients and or a high bioload that you want to keep in check then that's a different story. Hope you figure ut out!

I think it maybe a bacteria bloom also so any idea what steps to take to remove biopellets?!? I also dose zeoback another reason is because I did it before but that tank had a sand bed

Drop in a decent flow area and it will clear up your water quick. That along with filter sock to catch the larger junks, detritus etc.

I kept getting algae on my sandbed in my SPS tank. I've now pretty much got all the sand out (over a few water changes) and I've got 0 algae now! Plus I was able to up the flow.

Once I get my granite for my fish tank stand I made I will be starting my own thread loving the no sand look and flow galore!!!
Thanks again hope this all works

My tank is really clear and I only run a skimmer. Having a bare bottom tank is not going to be the source of the cloudiness. You have something else going on.

Ya for sure I really think it a bacterial bloom I'm gonna cut off the bio pellets and stop the zeobak dosing...being I have don't really have a bio load just a desjardin Tang and couple platinum clowns

I second that it is a bacterial bloom. When I was starting ZV I dosed too much ZeoStart (carbon) and had cloudy water for a few days.

I also noticed a stringy, gooey white substance on my filter socks.

I havnt noticed any stringy stuff but the tank looks great it is still coudy but sps is growing and even some wild colonies are looking great after a month
Alk 8.4
Cal 480
Mag is high at 1440-1480
I stopped pellet yesterday and and just running gfo and carbon gonna add some fish this weekend hopefully some nice wrasse and ????

Do you use filter socks? Before I used them my water was cloudy. If not brs has good ones for cheap. I've used the felt ones for a couple years and have had no problems. Just wash them once a week or sooner depending on bio load.
