battery back up

Iam spending all this money on corals and fish, I dont want to lose them...especially if these corals grow, dont want to lose them. Power goes out frequently where Iam out, but generally not longer then 4-6 hours, tho at times have had power out for a day or two during major noreasters and storms.

basically looking for a battery back up for running one wavemaker and a hob filter should the power go out. Not sure if a battery back up will provide enough juice just to run those for several hours till I get home...then I can grab the generator if the power outage continues. Or should I not even worry about it...How long can a system last without flow and circulation. 8 hours would be the max of being away until I got home.

Thanks

Depending on the stocking level of the tank the time varies. From my experience 4 hours is fine but anything more makes me nervous.

If you have a vortech you can get a battery backup that will last for many hours.

Generally computer UPS systems are designed for a large load for a short time so most will not give you very long run time.

A battery operated airstone can keep the water oxygenated. There are several diy setups that will work.

yea, liking the stone idea...wonder if they sell air pump that operates off batteries and comes on only when power is off? I figure worst case scenario would be 8 hours and power would have to go off when I walk out the door.
Gonna google diy setups and see what I can come up with.

If you are handy...

You can take a 110v relay, install a cord, and plug it into the wall. You run the battery that powers the air pump through the NC contacts. When power goes out the contacts close and bam, you have air.

or you can buy one for cheap...

It really depends on your demand, I'm not sure how long the one linked above lasts in an outage. I have this guy... it lasts a long time on battery. I use it in my fish QT tanks that don't have vortechs but it would need the mod I described above to work only when the power is out.
