Battle CYANO!

Do you have a DSB? I do and am afraid one day it will go from being a friend to an enemy overnight. My tank is 4 years old and so far so good.

Good luck and don't let the naysayers put down your successful system. Nothing stays perfect forever. This is just a problem you will find a solution to.

I only did water changes once a year for the first three years. I do more now since I don't have my NSW connection.

*edit - Even though my TDS read "zero" my filters weren't exactly working very well. I changed them out, including the RO membrane.

Well I was fighting a bit of cyano inside my tank. I bought chemipure elite, doing 10-15% water changes per week and during each water change with a turkey baster removed all the debri/cyano off the rocks. That did the trick. Do not let it overgrow. Hope this helps.

what helped me the most when i was fighting it was to siphon it out when doing water changes. and about once a month, after a water change i would do a 3 day lights out period with no lights. not even atinics and i even covered the tank with a blanket to block out any lights from the house. i have a mixed reef with soft, lps and sps, and nothing minded the 3 day dark period. when removing the blankets and turning on the lights it was like night and day, pretty much completly eradicated it. But like everyone else said, yuo have to find the source, and water changes seem to be the best and easiest way to do that. The lights out really puts a choke hold on the cyno and can kill it off but if you still have fuel feeding it it will be back within a matter of weeks or even days.

mine came back after about a month and a half but only slightly in isolated pockets and those were easily killed off by another water change.

for the dinos at least, less light will fix your problem.

It might sound harsh, but it will do the trick. I was completely infested with them, did this and they were gone and never to come back. Some of my corals didnt seem the best in shape after but a few days later they were better than ever.

do a 2 day complete black out of the tank (no ambient light) then switch to a 6ish hour schedule.

raising magnesium to about 1350 also helps
