Beautiful, Mean and Expensive - Fish NOT Girl

kimha... you have a nice large tank and if you had a smaller one i would be inclined to aree with the posts on the regal and mordish idols... do you know where the idols came from...?

the ones from hawaii do much better and acclimated better... are any fish stressing the idols??

try getting some live brine.... some artic pods by reef nutrituion.. and one thing that worked for me with the idols was tetra pellets.. they float mid water and were great to get them eating...

other thing that has worked well with idols is to get some clams or oysters and open up thehalf shell and put in tank... in other words let them eat off the half shell on the bottom of the tank...

as for you regal they take time and need a very peacefull tank... if your live rock is covered with goodiies growing he will have a better chance... bottom line ... these fish are for advaced hobbyist but not impossible... you need togive them a lot of attention....in time the regal might become a great eater.. mine did...

good luck....

I think it is irresponsible to buy fish you know nothing about. These are all wild-caught fish from our already depleted/dying oceans. Please tell us your plans for them.

Puffer, that's a little aggressive, please try to tone it down! :)

Kimha, as you can tell, we are all fairly protective of our wildlife, but we do wish you success with these beautiful creatures!

While I'm hoping that it all turns out great, I suspect you'll be in for a little trouble with the specimens chosen. I've done similar things on the spur of the moment and have regretted it......

As suggested, it might be better to fully research each specimen before adding them. Also, certain combinations of fish will likely start WWIII...

Best of luck to you! Let us know how it turns out!

Thank you very much for your very sound advice. I don't know where the Moorish Idol came from, but they are doing quite well so far. My refugium plants has some sponge attached to them and the Idols are eating the sponge. I have another small butterfly in there, but they are getting along quite well. None of them look stress at all. When it comes to taking care of my fish, I spare NO expense:) .

Where can I buy live brine and pods?

As for the Regal, he is in a 90g with a 4" fox face, 3" maroon gold stripe clown, and a 4" Imperator. Since the Regal is 7", all fish get out of his way, so he is the new boss. They are quite peaceful together.

What food does Regal angel likes best? What do you feed yours with?

I do have a contigency plan for the blueline trigger - A 135g tank awaits him if he becomes a trouble maker.

So far he is quite peaceful in the 300g tank. I have a 2" blue damsel, 4" Red Sea sailfin tang, and an 6" imperator in there. I have been keeping a close eye on him and he shows no agression toward other fish. I saw the sailfin and imperator swam right next to him, and he didn't show any aggression. Once a while the imperator charge at him and not the other way around. Here is a pic of them right next to each other.

If you know where I can get some live food locally, please let me know. Since the Idols are eating sponge now, I really want to get some more. Just don't know who sells them.

I also want to thank you everyone for your inputs and feedbacks. I did a little bit of reading on these fish before I purchased them. Not a lot just a little bit :D .

Coral Reef sells live brine. 7723 W Lawrence, Norridge.
708-456-0768 Unless the brine is fed nutricious foods though, they are basicly non-nutricious--mostly water.

Very cool fish you have. hope everything works out. As it most likely will since you DO have back up plan.
Have fun and dont worry about .......... well you know
I think your up in my neck of the woods.

Oh ya I bought a queen trigger once BOY was it MEAN
had to have my daughter hold a net in the tank while i cleaned it.
otherwise it would go for my hand. They have NO FEAR very cool.
I have the 90 I just took down might just make it a FO tank.

What got me into buying trigger fish was Bubba (Undulated Trigger from Doug). After I saw that beast attacked everything Doug put into the tank, I knew one day I would have a trigger of my own. They are just so much fun to play with during feeding time. So far I still have all 10 fingers intact

Bubba is an Undulated trigger. I have a 4" one (bubba#2) and he would attacked everything include my fingers as well. So he is in a 90g all by himself. The 7" trigger I just bought is a blueline trigger or yellowdot. He is quite tame compare to bubba tho. So far he just mind his own business and never bother anything in the tank. Not even the little red leg crabs I have in there.

Ya know, I have a FW puffer that's >12". The species has a nasty rep of killing anything that lives in it's tank, even biting armour-covered catfish 2x their size, in half. Every once in a while you'll find one that'll allow tank mates. My Filbert is one of the rare fellows that does. Although he has eaten a few smaller tiger barbs & nipped a few tail & dorsal fins that have grown back beautifully--so far so good. I wish you the same with your trigger. Just be prepared for the worst... Sorry for giving you such a hard time. It's just that I have been diving for 9 short years & there are less & less fish. We are responsible in keeping these species alive & healthy as long as we possibly can. Soon, there will be no more...

i forgot to mention... get a 6 or eight inch piced of live rock.. rubberband some nori on it.. roll the nori up and put some golden pearls in the nori and then rubbe band it to the rock as the regal or other fish eat the nori the golden pearls will be relaesed in to the water colum.. it worked form my regals and my morish idols... get the idols fat and eating before pttin them into the main display..

by the way.. my regals did better when i just put them in the main tank.. in other words i did not acclimate them in small surroundings.. i think it works better assuming peacefull tank mates and the more rock with goddies on it is a plus..

peace

Nori is the same thing as dried seaweed right? If it is dried seaweed, I have a big bag of it. And what exactly is golden pearls and where can I buy it?

yes nori is dried seaweed.... comes in bags.. sheets of 100.. you wat the sheets... asian food store sells it.. try to find "not roasted"..

golden pearls look up on line.. i think its www.brineshrimpdirect.com

but not sure... do searchon line here and you will find

peace

go heavy on the greens....idols are like tangs and if u feed heavy protien they will NOT last long...they do best in a well established tank with a lot of live rock... pelleted food would be the BEST daily diet....stay away from live foods....
good luck

Thank you all for your help providing information on Moorish Idol and Regal angel. It really help me and the fish !!! Here is an update.

Moorish Idols start eating Nori I just bought from a Korean store. Most of the words are in Korean so I don't understand it. But it has a few English words "Dried Seaweed Sushi-Nori" and have pictures of Japanise Sushi rolls. I rolled it up and tied it to a piece of LR with rubberband. They instantly came to inspect and start picking at it.

For the Regal Angel, I tried everything from mysis, brine, ocean Nutrition frozen and pellet formulas. Nothing worked until I tried Chicago's suggestion... half open clam...... this one worked instantly. Within seconds, the Regal came out of his hidding place to inspect, take a little nip at it for a taste test, then contant picking at it. I don't know what is so special about clam for the Regal, but the Regal forgot about his shyness and came out of his hidding place as soon as the clam landed on the sand.

I am so happy these fish ( is it fish or fishes?) are eating well....:bounce1:

Yippee!!! Glad to hear you're working so dilligently at keeping thes fish alive & healthy. No hard feelings, I hope.

No hard feelings :) . I value both good and bad criticisms. I have to admit I do have a bad habbit of "try it first... read later" even for things outside of this hobbie. Especially equipment. Never read the manual until I couldn't get it to work:D .

I guess my frustration is a carryover from my puffer forum & answering questions at WWM. You wouldn't believe how many folks fall for those cute, begging faces & wind up dessimating their whole tank, by not asking about them 1st!
