Best CA Reactor for 600g holding system?

Hello,

We are looking for a large CA reactor for our 600g import coral holding system. We have looked at Schuran Jetstream 2, korallin C3002 and Deltec pf601 & pf1001

Any advise is much appreciated, looking for something steady & stable.

Thanks!

You left off Geo;) I would take that over the others hands down.

I'll check them out, my buddy Kenny just got one and he's happy.

I'm looking for something that won't require weekly tuning

GEO Ca Reactor would be the only way I would go. They are built like a truck. Very easy to dial in and very trust worthy to stay consistent with it's operation.

I'm a pretty biased GEO fan, but I have used his skimmers and reactors for a while. I don't have personal experience with the Schuran, but have read about how horrible they are to tune, not to mention if you need parts for them....the main company is in Germany and if you need something now, you will not get it.

As for Deltec, definitely a quality product with a big price tag. People seem very happy with them and I think they buy the brand for that reputation of being the best, but they are also paying for it.

The GEO line is here in the United States, owned and operated by George out of Ohio...he is a stand up guy who will be here for years to come and his products are very reliable...in particular, his reactors are truly set and forget.

I personally have not tried the GEO but have only heard good things about there products, but I have used the Schuran and I loved it you may have to do a little more work to it than others but that's why this is a hobby.

I would vote Deltec PF601s hands down. You can achieve a higher dkh with it, it's incredibly co2 efficient, the media is always tumbling so it doesn't channel, and you can refill the media and not take the entire reactor apart.

I'm not sure, but having the media tumbling all the time seems like that could be a bad thing. To me it seems that by tumbling it would cause it to break down faster. I know the PH is the main factor for break down, but tumbling would have to add to it as well wouldn't it?

I use the large media so I don't think channeling is an issue for me.

I have owned the Korallin 3002 and it does not compare to the Schuran Jestream 2 I own today. The Schuran was a set and forget device. I have not touched it for months ever since I dialed it in. Its very consistent and I dont even use a peristaltic pump.

The tumbling of the media should just help in an even melt, making it possible to refill the reactor without breaking it down. I've seen dkH in excess of 60 come out of Deltec reactors so maybe the media does melt faster than normal media?

You are the first person I have heard say the Schuran was a set and forget it device.

I agree with Edward...I too own a Schuran reactor...very satisfied with its performance. At the early stage, I was having a problem feeding the reactor but once I utilized a peristaltic pump the issue
was resolved. I don't have to touch the reactor..only when I have to refill the media.

Geo products are great as well...many friends uses his stuff and very pleased with the products.

I was also surprised. When I first set it up I set it for constant drip effluent flow like I did in my past tank. I set it at Alkalinity of 12 and havent looked back to touch it. I kept testing Alkalinity and it never changed. Now I test every water change and it remains the same. The constant drip remains the same. One difference I made in my past Korallin 3002 setup was that I was using a Maxi 1200. For my SJ2, I am now using a Aquaclear 802 powerhead which is a lot stronger to feed the reactor. The JS2 sits parallel 5 ft away from the 802 Powerhead which sits in the sump. In the beginning I had the reactor above the sump, but the feed didnt seem as strong. I keep my PH Controller at 6.6 and also ONLY fill up the reactor halfway full (coarse media) for circulation improvement by the built in Eheim 1260. Since the JS1 is smaller with a different model pump, Im not sure if that has anything to do with how I have been succesful with the JS2 by only feeding with a powerhead. I hope that helps with how I am able to keep consistent water parameters in my aquarium. The corals couldnt be happier by how stable my aquarium has been. This was one of my peeves in my last tank with my Korallin dropping/raising Alkalinity.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I spoke with a friend who has owned both the js2 and pf601 and his experience was that the deltec media ate through pumps. Perhaps the extra tumbling could account for this?

He said the js2 was his preferred model of those two.

I just bought a geo 818...its HUGE

and here it is running ( the cloudiness is due to the substrate, that cleared in an hour).

Its a very nicely built unit.
