BEST dosing pumps/system?

I've decided I'm going to do a 2 part dosing system for ca/alk on my 55G. I'm having a hard time choosing the best pumps on the market. The "BRS-TV" video claims that their pumps are the ONLY pumps that are made by a company that specifically makes ONLY pumps, and not designed by hobbyists. Not sure if that's true.

What are the best pumps out there? I searched through a few threads and really couldn't find anything conclusive. Any thoughts? I really don't mind spending some money on a package that includes a controller. Just wanna make sure I only buy this once!

Thanks!

I would say the best peristaltic pumps would be Cole Parmer Masterflex. But if you are looking for something with a controller, they may not be the way to go. I would defiantly do some searching on them for your self.

I picked up a real nice Masterflex off ebay, that I use for automated water changing. I also have a smaller 2rpm pump I picked up on the cheap that I”ve yet to put into service.
They are rock solid, industry tested and trusted.

I'm very happy with my spectrapure litremeter3. Definitley one of the best and they back it up with a 5 year warranty. Programming is easy, set the total daily dose and it doses it in very small increments 150 times a day. Much better than once an hour like some other systems IMO.

bubble Magnus Dosing Unit.
Has 3 pumps and a built in controller. plus you can add more dosing units to this. And
You can break the doses up to 24 times a day for rock solid parameters. I really like it.

Wow, six responses ... six different pumps. I guess they're all pretty safe. It seems like if I go for standalone units (BRS, Cole, etc) - they just need a good timer (controller) and if I go for a controlled unit (Spectrapure, LM, Profilux) - they're all pretty reliable?

I don't know much about Bubble Magnus, it seems like a less expensive version of the Profilux?

These 2 are the same suggestions. :) If you go with a stand alone pump, you may want to consider a RKL. For a little over $100, you get 4 programmable outlets.

he BRS Drew dosers are great, i have used them for years.

I've been using Drews dosing pumps which can be bought from BRS and really like them.

I've just ordered the litremeter, mainly for the fact that it allows calibration on each ofthe pumps in situ, so I can be sure I'm putting in *exactly* what I think I am.

If you're just dosing with nearby sources, this might not be a problem, but since I'm using it for water change, I really want what's taken ou to be the same as what goes in, and my water tank reservoirs are ~50' away from the tank itself.

The BM stand alone doser looks like a nice piece of equipment. It has a decent price point, provides controllability and does the dosing. Although I don't have any experience with this controller I did consider it and looked into it at one time. I ended up using choosing the profilux with the profilux controller because I wanted a single integrated system.

Marine magic 3 dossing part $149 in ebay . Cant beat the price, comes with temp probe too

I used the BM Doser for a week and after the pump head popped off I sent it back (just a warning, I'm not the only one that this has happened to)...I then purchased the Profilux Doser and it has worked perfectly ever since I hooked it up.

After a bunch of reading it seems like the Profilux has the least amount of issues. The Drews/BRS pumps look great but I like the fact that with Profilux there is only ONE plug, the programming is easy, etc. Bubble Magnus and Marine Magic seem good as well, but it seems like there are more profilux units out there and support may be better.

Thanks all! Now, where is the cheapest place to get it? :)

David, Long time no see!
I have a 4-pump profilux and loved it, easy to use and program. you tell it how many mls to dose and how many times per day and you are done. It will calcualt how long to run each pump and devinde the dosing times evenly. However on a large tank I would much rather prefer a Calcium reactor. I just hated the added maintenance with filling the 2-part resevoir. Personally I would never go back to a dosing unless it is on a small tank. Hit me up if you are serious on going to dosing as I have gone back to a calcium reactor.

Greg ... wuuuussssuuuuupppp!!!!

The tank I'm using this for is a 55G tank. What do you think? I hear ya on refilling the bottles, this tank is very much a mixed reef so it seems like a ca rx may be overkill? I dunno man, what do you think?

I think you'll like the profilux. :)

The cheapest place to get it is the used equipment forum, but otherwise I think progressivereef is another option.

The profilux looks really nice, but I am thinking if you have that controller, just use the BRS dosing pumps. They look very reliable, simple and you program with your controller

55g! Perfect for dosing! Some of the profilux dosers have to be controlled by the Profilux controller system. the one I have is a stand alone with a built in controller.
