Currently setting up a 20 gallon long Quarentine and Hospital tank to treat Ich Outbreaks and new fish purchases

I purchased a heater and a basic light, air pump/stone , now what is the best filter I should Run?

I was thinking of either of these two.

Penguin BIO-Wheel Power Filters

or

Hagen AquaClear Power Filters

Please let me know as I plan on keeping this running all the time.

Thanks

Hagen Aquaclear filters are by far the best HOB filters. The media chambers are HUGE, so you can add any kind of media you'd like. Also, the pumps are virtually silent.

One downside to Hagens is that it's made of pretty flimsy plastic.

This one is nice.. inexpensive too. It surface skims as well.

I don't use their media filters. Basiclly stuff it wit fluval sponge for biofiltration. You can keep these sponges in the sump of your DT so they are always ready to go. Just disinfect or use new before placing in the DT once these have been used in the QT tank. You can also yank the sponges and run a pretty big bag of carbon in here as needed too.

It would be tough to pre charge a bio wheel in the DT like you can a sponge.

As was said above hagen aquaclear filters work great for a qt.I have a aquaclear 70 on a 55g qt and it works great.Huge area to put whatever media you want if you chose not to use the ones made for the filter.

Both HOT power filter box or a canister filter will do.

Try not to use a very small one unless you know how to augment the size of the medium compartment (which is actually easy).

The canister filter has a slight advantage in that you can cycle medium with a canister filter with a container of any shape, even a round 5 gal bucket is very good to cycle a medium with. An HOT requires a container with a straight edge.

Personally, I often use just a pump, a hose, and a shallow tray etc to set up a crude DIY wet-dry by dripping water over the medium, if I want top nitrification efficiency for QTing many larger fish at once.
