Best light for zoanthid growth?

I have a 125g with 3x250w MH Phoenix 14k bulbs,
also a 9g aquamedic nano with 2x24w PC lighting.

Which will grow out my zoanthids faster?

from my experience i have only used pc in the past but got the best growth overall with t5 ati blue plus bulbs.
from what i have seen with MH, keep the zoanthids on the bottom maybe on the side cause MH can end up bleaching and melting the zoanthids.

It really depends on the zoas. I have some kedds reds that love light, while my blue hornets almost died in the same light.

I would say keep using the halide maybe put in a 20k bulb and test that out. My zoanthids grow like weeds under a 250w 20k radium. Faster than anybody's tank in my area that I've seen so far.

My zoas grow really well under my leds I am running 3 - 120W panels on my 150g configured 35 - 16000K, 28 - 14000K, 28 453nm blue and 28, 468nm blue.

Light is ONE factor for growth. But keeping consistent water parameters i find is more important.

+1 if you keep your params stable and there is good nutrients in the water constantly will affect growth more than different lights. This along with a flow each zoas likes and I think you could see great results under either light.

like friday said stability is key ive got some zoas literally 3" from light and they explode and have the same frag from that colony on the bottom and explode colors are a little different but that would be because of the lighting.

the biggest thing is ALK swings keep ur alk as stable as possible mind dont like it at all i keep my alk about 14 yes thats a little high but i seem to get better colors and size from it when i keep it high

I'll either try 20k, or possibly set up a frag grow out tank with LEDs.

Thats what I have! If we trade zoas again you should stop by and see my tank.

I agree with gindobuck though --- I found Good t5HO bulbs will grow zoas fast...

My LEDS really make the colors of my coral come out but the growth seemed to stall when I had the lights on full... I added a dimmer and they have started to grow better --- guess time will tell.

I have also found that ati bulbs help zoa's to grow..and reefbrite led which mine are none dimmable really do almost begin to melt them..prolly the fact that they are undimmable..How do yall get best color outta youre zoanthids? mine seem to fade in brightness no matter what..due to the fact that my tank is only 6 months old? so my water is always within the good ranges, but it does change say ph goes from 7.8 low end to 8.2 where i would like it..all within a month..and how do i know if i have nutrients? and how do i get some ..lol..too much would cause algae growth so i have no idea but my Zoanthids really kinda pale out..

FRIDAY hits nail on head. I agree with you 100%.

Lighting is but one factor of many which will determine how much growth you will attain. I have seen stunning growth in zoanthid tanks from MH to VHO and even PCs. My tank back in the day was all PCs and my polyps literally grew out the tank. Tank maturity, parameters, flow, lighting type, wattage, k value, nutrient level, number of fish, etc etc etc will determine your growth rate and a dedicated understanding of zoas and palys.

Good luck my friend.

Couldn't agree more. Many newbs coming into the hobby want "insta reef." They think that going out and buying the most expensive light money can buy will give them the holy grail of reefs. It's not that easy.
Its just like growing flowers or a garden, it needs more than sun if you want it to look spectacular. You must water the plants, weed around them, make sure they are pest free, and feed them when needed.

Of course lighting is one variable, but a good quality light is essential for proper coral growth and coloration. It is one factor that been people new to the hobby do not give enough weight to, at least in my experience.

What alk level seems to be best for growing zoas?? Im currently trying to run a ULNS with the zeovit additives/supplements and using a vertex 1.5L reactor for the zeolith media. The guys on the zeovit forums state my alk cannot go above 8!
Which really sucks cause in a sps tank i find 9-10 is better why does a ULNS require such a low alk of 6 to 7.5??

A dkh of 8 to 9 is sufficient. I have never used Zeo so I digress and you should seek the advice of someone familiar in that area. Good luck my friend.
