Best offer

Why is it that you cant have a best offer price on here? People ask a certain price for something and when it doesnt sell for that price they go down with the price 3 or 4 times anyways! It seems to me it would save some time in the selling if that were allowed.

seems to me that a lot of people put OBO on thier FS threads. I think what RC is trying to avoid with no best offers is creating an auction type situation.

Fair question....but,in contrast, if we don't indicate an asking price, we leave ourselves open to an overwhelming amount of low ball PMs...
I think an asking price also helps the buyer in that they have a fair indication of what the seller is looking to receive as opposed to just guessing.
Truth is, some people need to continually reduce their prices because they priced their items too high to begin with...
without a set asking price, an item can stay "for sale" indefinately with months of "best offers" until a seller reaches their desired selling price...
so...rather than play "let's make a deal", I think a posted asking price actually makes a sale go faster...

just my 2 cents...;)

As I understand it, giving people a place to sell is not the primary mission of Reef Central. Ebay, Craigslist, and local club web sites do exist. Reef Central has developed rules in an attempt to keep focused on their mission statement. If this is inconvenient to buyers or sellers, they can always utilize Ebay, Craigslist or their local club web site.

excellent point...

i think you can Puff, but IMO a price followed by OBO means you'll go lower, not looking for higher offers. Like said above, I think they don't want this place to turn into ebay or craigs, which is good. But the rules do state to post a FIRM price, if I remember correctly, so they could take issue with OBO if they wanted too.

If someone wants $500 obo for a tank for corals and fish. In no way will I ever offer $500, $450-400 is what my OBO will be. as poo notes, no one will go higher. I see obo and it is time to go lower.

I agree. This is a place that is flexible. Lets not make it a only for sale site.

If I have something extra I offer it for what its worth to me.

Fair and not open to negotiation. It is what it is.

If I have lots of extra stuff pay it forward...Free...Its about the hobby.

Everyone wins.

I'm here more for the collective knowledge than the FS by hobbyist.

BTW thanks to all of thoes who welcomed me into their homes and helped me make my tank better. The FS option has helped all of us.

We need to keep this open.

Can we post a price & then say, "OBO" after the price?

Yes, that is acceptable.

FWIW, a few of you guys seem to have a good handle on our motives. We think more of RC than just a flea market, and places like Ebay exist for the purpose of selling/auctioning stuff. First and foremost, we are here for the exchange of hobby related information, selling is something we offer as a perk to people that participate in the community, and help to further our mission.
