"Best" overall preventative quarantine medication - ParaGuard?

Don't know what's in the first two. However, Rally contains acriflavine, and I've had pretty good success using that (in a bath treatment) to treat both brook & velvet before placing the fish in a QT with CP. Acriflavine is not as harsh or toxic (non-carcinogen) as formalin, but in experiments I've done comparing the two side-by-side results were the same.

Yes, I've read this too, but I've never tried it.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not averse to using Acriflavine as an alternative to Formalin. I am averse to using anything of the sort in the DT (even if it only contains small amounts of formalin and aminoacridine). The fact that the manufacturer touts it as a "reef safe" treatment automatically disqualifies them as a legitimate source in my view.

Agreed, I would never use acriflavine in a DT. After all, it turns the water a brownish red color and has actually stained some of my PVC elbows. :eek2: But I do like how you can give a fish an acriflavine bath and not have to worry about it. I've kept a fish in acriflavine for 24 hrs or longer. With formalin, its like this nervous countdown to get them out after 45 mins.

I think Ruby Reef just got "lucky" when they stumbled upon acriflavine and decided to design Rally around it. Aquarium medications containing acriflavine can be harder to find in the US than formalin-based ones. I can't find Acriflavine-MS for sale anywhere. So, I think Rally sort of cashes in on that.

Not that I left any fish in a formalin bath for more than 50 minutes, but I think most would easily handle 60 minutes or even more.

Here you go: Nt Labs Koi Care Acriflavin

I may add this to my medicine cabinet for the fish that can't handle CP - after all, I have quite a few pipefish.

Also, can someone post the best procedure for prophylactically treating the fish (or a link if it has already been posted, sorry about that)?

So, my question is, this treatment is upon acquiring a new fish and before the start of the QT period or after the QT period is over and before adding to a DT?

Also, while I have seen TTM procedures, how do you combine that with Prazi? Is prazi added back to the water on each transfer? For the formalin, we are only dipping, and not also adding it to the tank water if I understand correctly?

My QT is close to being cycled and I want to know exactly what I'm going to do to treat my new fish prophylactically.
It sounds like formalin bath, TTM, and prazipro. But how and in what order are these treatments administered?

And there lies the problem...

A dip, then 4 tank transfers, then a Prazipro treatment, and then another tank transfer...

A lot of saltwater fish cannot take all of that stress.

Especially the high-priced ones - Regal Angels, Golden Butterfly, etc.

They have already gone through enough transfers and stress prior to us even receiving them.

If done properly, there is little to no stress. PP is done during tank transfer.

No more stressful than treating with copper for 30 days or any other medications. The stress from not treating and fish living with disease will surely kill them

Only twice about a week apart

Ok, so I'm a little confused now.. Ok, so let's say we are doing TTM:

Day 1: Dose PP.

Day 3 : Transfer to new tank. There is no PP in the new tank. Dose PP? Break down previous tank and toss out water with PP in it (and presumably ich). Dry completely.

Day 6: Transfer to tank with new water re-dose PP?
etc..

Hi Snorvich, just curious how you feel about using New Life Spectrum Ich Shield (CP) powder instead of TTM? I've had great results with it and I find it simpler than TTM.

CP is not ideal for ich especially prophylactically.
