I may be in the O'Fallon, IL area soon and I was wondering were is the best place to buy a nice blue maxima or crocea clam? I am also in the market for some SPS, mainly pink stylophora, birds nest, or maybe some acro. If i get this, i have about a 2.5 hour drive.....so it can't be too far out.

BTW, I was at Aquatic Treasures a few weeks ago and wow, was i surprised! They have really, really down sized. They didn't have much and service was poor. I wasn't even greeted or approached for help. Hope things get better for them.

That's kind of a loaded question. The best place is the one that has one that you like.

You can try almost all of the places listed in the LFS listing at the top of the forum.

Aquatic Treasures has downsized but their saltwater section is about the same size that it was at the old stroe. They pretty much only eliminated the freshwater section and kept the other stuff the same except for the tall cube tank that they used to have..

No recommendations or people to go talk to?

The place I have seen the best looking Clams is Gateway and Marine Solutions. That is where both of mine have come from.

IMO - One of the things I hate about pictures of clams is the one you are looking at now looks great from top down... But what does it look like looking through the tank. I always try and not to look down when deciding on which colors to get. Now if you have a look down tank then that is a different story. But again that is MO.

I've noticed that too. Some are spectacular top-down, then the way the light hits from the side will make them dull purple. Still pretty but not the same. Others just look good vs. great from the top but the way the light refracts on the side view makes them look better than the other ones. Same with corals too.

clamsdirect.com, is the best online retailer, so I have heard, look into that.

EDIT: Just visited the site, Barry does not have crap there, I guess collection is slow this time of year...

premium is great for dry goods, they recently opened a live web based business, I can only estimate that they have good stuff.

If your going to go online, you can't go wrong with Clamsdirect. If your going local for clams my #1 would be Gateway followed by Marine Solutions. Aquatic Treasures usually doesn't have many clam available anymore. It's a shame too, waste of a perfectly good edgeless lookdown tank.
