I use and have always used Instant Ocean. Just my personal preference.... has worked great for my tank.

In my area IO is kinda so, so. I love tropic marin but hate the price. (since Im a water change nut). I have been known to use Commodity Axxis stuff with great results. They even have a a pro reef variety. Ocean pure is the "name" I think. Other than that, Oceanic cause its cheap and dissolves quickly and nicely with my water. My next experiment will be with the Seachem stuff and see what happens. Price aint too bad but some of the "reef" ingredients has me perplexed. Anyone else?

I like Reef Crystals. In a reef with stony corals you really need to supplement Instant Ocean with Mg and Ca when you do waterchanges which is not needed for the Reef Crystals.

What ever is on sale.... Last purchase was 3 buckets of Reef Crystals $98 delivered (Dr fosters and smith). I also use IO by the 200g box. They run the same price as the buckets normally

Question: I have a box of IO, not open yet, been left out in the patio, for over a year, partitial sun shine . Is it still OK to use.

Pretty sure I read a write up of different salts on reefkeeper magazine before...or maybe it was a write up in the chem forum. From my general knowledge the best salt is determined on your livestock(mineral uptake) and husbandry routine.

I can't think of anything in these mixes that should be effected by time or sunlight. Should be fine, though it may be concrete-solid and take forever to dissolve. I used some at one point that was over 5 years old (it was forgotten about in my basement) and it worked well despite taking a long time to dissolve.

Same here. ALL of them have a parameter that is off, and most of them, its very cheap to fix, so I just buy whatever is the cheapest.


Plus, TM is high in phosphate.

Instant Ocean for me. I bolster the Calcium with about 70ppm Calcium Chloride at water changes.

If you are going to use IO prepare to dose calcium and other supplements to get multiple levels in check. In the latest study they have also shown that for whatever reason IO has issues with cyno = red slime algae. I would personally atleast go with something like Reef Crystals if you are going to keep a reef because it is more reef oriented in its makeup. I personally use Red Sea Coral Pro and have used Tropic Marin Pro Reef, both with good results, but i did switch to Red Sea Coral Pro because of the levels of phosphate in TM.

The ONLY difference between reef crystals and IO is higher calcium. The cost of bumping up an entire bucket is about $1.


IO doesnt create cyano. Bad aquarists do.
