Ive been looking around for a while now and im trying to firgure out which skimmer for its price is best(one that wont cost me an arm and a leg) but has a good price that isnt overrated. Any help?

When you ask these questions include specifics such as bioload and livestock. You might get more responses.

I have an Aquamedic turboflotor 1000 thats rated to 180 gallons, I have it on 125-150g system volume, corals coming out my wazoo and around 14 fish, I recently upgraded to a reef octo nwb250 in anticipation of upgrading to more volume, if you are interested and would like pics I can pm them to you I would like 125.00 for it, it has done a good job and pulls some good skimmate.

I have the ASM Mini-G in my 65g and it's great! It was $145 at ABC when I got it. The G-1 is a tad more (a big tad!).

I'm a big fan of the Reef Octopus skimmers for several reasons, but mainly because they are reliable, efficient, low-cost and parts are always readily available. What's your budget?

My complaint with the octopus is that when there is a power failure it does not go back into operation. I need to put my finger into the water intake hole to start it. I heard other people have this same issue.

That's the first time that I've heard of that issue with the octopus. Is there calcium build up or possibly a problem with the impeller or impeller housing?

I actually heard the staff and the customer talking about it while I was at ARC last week and I chimed in that it happens to me all the time when i do a water change and shut it off. They said it was a common issue. It has occurred since I bought it.

I have two octopus skimmers and have never had that problem. They do tend to get calcium buildup in the air inlet pretty quickly though.

Some folks add some rodi through the air intake every day to keep it clean. For the xp3000 I'm running the air intake partly draws from the cup to pull moisture through keeping things clean. If I get ambitious I'll run a line from a spare dosing port to run some water through the inlet :)

yea its a commo issue with alot of skimmers that get ca build up inside the impeller housing. the jerk of pressure from when your finger is on the intake to not on it jump starts it kind of. take it apart and soak in a vinegar bath overnight and clean. itll run like brand new
