Best thing about living in Rochester.

5 or so LFS. An hr from two other cities with a great shop or 2. I just think we are lucky where we are for this hobby. Not too sure whats south of us other then fellow reefers. It seems like were almost a hub for interest in the hobby. Just a random thought.

Yes you guys in that area are very lucky to have such a saturation of shops close by. Thankfully ABC reefs opened in SYR. or alot of us would be paying thru way tolls and filling up just to get decent coral/fish. Let alone the 3 hours of driving. I'm not sure but having those shops must help keep the costs down-must have competition to keep prices low. Would be interesting to see how syr. prices compare to the rocha cha prices for the same items. maybe some travelers could chime in. I know Kat has been to both areas.

The drive to B'Lo is a pain but def worth it. With my truck it's a $80 to Buffalo and back so that plus $100 of corals...eeek. Rochester is a good distance I just have to get used to where I am going...lol I think if ABC Reef's was not around I would have never got into the hobby.

okay...comparative shopper here....Rochester does, indeed, have the corner on the market as far as the amount of LFS we have. I've been to both ABC and ARC and found that everyone seems to be on the same plain. Just like shopping for clothes, groceries, etc...you'll find a bargain here or there, something unique at one place or something you can always count on finding at another. I really think variety is the spice of life, so i am grateful that there are SO many places to choose from. Also, the friendships we've made here on the forum is a beautiful thing...definitely not to be taken for granted...that's part of the fun of the roadtrips....

I've been to both of the REALLY good shops in Rochester and our Syracuse shop. Prices seem comparable at all of them, but I can't help but to feel the best quality corals are found at The Reef Shoppe. Somehow they just always seem to have a super nice selection of corals. All three seem to get good stuff in though. I love that ABC is only 45 minutes from me...I was getting tired of driving two ours out to Rochester to see some nice stuff. Of course now that Rochester has a Chipotle Burrito place it makes the drive that much more worthwhile :)

I didn't know there were only 2 REALLY good shops in Rochester. I can think of four i like to spend my time at. ABC in Fairport, Marine Oasis in Spencerport, Caribbean Forest, And The Reef Shop. What shops have you not gone to out here?

+1

ABC and Marine Oasis are the two I never stop at. I think I may have been to Marine Oasis once, as I recall it was a sort of mix shop. I was along for the ride. I really like Caribbean Forest and The Reef Shoppe though because they are (were) purely salt water/reef shops. Of course now The Reef Shoppe has opened up that back half to tropical fresh water, but since I still think they have the nicest selection of corals I'll forgive them for that. They are also just a couple of blocks from each other....that third shop I went to seemed to be quite a ways away from these two....

Well, we've got the original Dinosaur, ABC Reefs, and......

Ah, Roch is pretty cool. Dryer Road for mountain biking is a ton of fun. I'm due for a run. I haven't been to CRF or TRS in many moons. Definitely worth the trip for anyone here in Syr that hasn't been out there.

your cruel kat..lol
you know i love ya, Drew....;)

It may be the "original" Dinosaur...but ours has just as many bikers....

Its so affordable to live here. NYS is a gorgeous state. It's just that we get taxed to death, so people don't appreciate it as much. Great outdoors. Hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, cross country skiing, etc etc etc. And CNY is obviously a hotbed of reef activity. A correlation between having an ocean in our living room and the heaviest snow fall in country is not so hard to make :hmm3:

Best thing about Rochester has to be that it's not Bentonville, Arkansas ..... the birthplace of Walmart (and yes I lived there for a few months) ::shudder::

I've been lots of other places (grew up in la college and work in Boston grad school in Alabama and Michigan). This is a great place to have a family. Low cost of living. Lots to do and safe.

Seems to be getting harder to find good tech jobs though. I worked at Kodak for about ten yrs then virtually at IBM for three. Now I'm hunting again. I'm seeing about five jobs in Austin in my field for every one I see here. I want to stay and hope I can find one more job here but my brain tells me that my days here are numbered.

Keep your eyes peeled in buffalo. It jobs are coming very soon.;) I was an IT field tech for 5 years in wny and was laid off due to budget. I now work as a "hired gun" doing IT TSing. Give it about a month the jobs will start appearing.
