Best Way To Break UP These Fish in QT

I'm going to be getting the following fish in the next few weeks and was curious what the best way to break them up into my QT tanks would be.

I have two 40 gallon breeders and a 20 gallon long setup for QT.

Fish coming in:
- 2-3" Black Tang
- 2-3" Purple Tang
- 2-3" Chevron Tang
- Potters Angel
- Flame Angel
- Pair of Flame Wrasses

Already have a Yellow Tang, Yellow Belly Blue Tang and Black Ice Clown in another tank that will go into the DT with this batch of QT fish.

Thanks guys :)

Here is what I would do. I'd put the black in the 20 at first, mainly just because its expensive and I wouldn't want it to be exposed to the others until I knew they were healthy. After that id section off a 40 with egg crate and separate the other two tangs and angels so they can see each other but not get to each other. The wrasses should be ok anywhere. I honestly don't think you need both 40b tanks for that group.

Thought about the black by itself in the 40 haha, guess the 20 should be plenty big enough for it.

Would you add some established sand and two Tupperware containers for the wrasses?

So basically:
20L - Black Tang
40 - Chevron, Flame Angel
40 - Purple, Potters Angel, Flame Wrasses

Think if they can all see each other that'll be good? Won't bother them while trying to get used to tank life? Like flaring at it other all the time.

BTW: I know it's a lot of fish, but makes sense to get these Pacific fish together to get much better prices. Also need to add the Purple since I'm adding the Black and an existing Yellow.

Would the Purple and Chevron have any issues being in a QT with a dwarf angel?

I thought I heard once that Zebr. Tangs (Like the purple) might not like those angels and butterflies as well...

Also, any problem if they can all see each other in QT?

Will the black and purple be mad that they could see the other in a different QT tank?

QT 1 40g Breeder: Purple, Potters, Flame Wrasses
QT 2 40g Breeder: Chevron, Flame
QT 3 20g Long: Black
QT 4 55g : Yellow Bellied Blue, Yellow, Black Ice Clown (Different room)

Better to keep Flames together? Would you change which Tang each Angel went with? Which Tang the Wrasses go with?

This is how the QT tanks will be setup for this round of QT (My wife loves it :P... not using that room for anything else right now though...), after we put new flooring if our front office (never used), we're going to have a 40g Breeder setup long term as a QT tank.

thats alot of fish, keep up on PWC. I would go purple/Potter/flame wrasse pair and black/chevron/flame angel

+1^ or put the black by itself in the 20g since it's the most expensive fish you have named and would get more of my attention personally, but they are very hardy possibly the hardiest tang you can purchase once acclimated to aquarium life

Unless the QT tanks are touching glass to glass the purple and black should be fine, you could always put a piece of construction paper over one side of the tank glass if need be

Thanks :)

Nothing is touching, good idea on the paper to cover some of the tank.

BTW: What size Black do you think I could put into the 20g long? I don't want to stress it out because it's too small. I'll probably end up with a 3-3.5" I'd imagine.

I would look for the smallest black you can get, 1.5" would be awesome (saw one at NYAquatics that size a few months back). If you get one that is 3-3.5" the 20g L is plenty big for the short term. I have my 5.5" Desjaradini in QT in a 29g sitting on my kitchen counter (which my wife also loves) with a 2" Bellus female and they have been in there now going on wk 6. I have seen people QT 7-8" Sohal tangs in 20g L without issues, just get a ammonia alert badge for each tank and keep up on the water changes.

Yeah I can get them smaller...

Was thinking I'm going to add an existing 2.5-3" Yellow and Purple (Hopefully 1.5-2"), having a larger Black would be good.

Heard out of the three, it would be the least aggressive followed by the Yellow than Purple.

Good to know about size not being an issue in QT.

Yeah, wouldn't take any chances with the black. Look forward to seeing them in your QT

Me too, going to fill up the QTs this weekend from a large WC on the DT.

Probably the last WC I'll do before getting the automatic water change system setup. Only crucial piece of hardware left on the system. (Not counting dosers/reactors).

Ease of maintainance is one of the single most important things when planning or setting up a big tank. No one wants to work harder than necessary, not to mention the countless hrs and $ you already have wrapped up in to this thus far. Then again nothing worth doing is easy or free (most of the time)

Yeah this tank has been so much easier to maintain so far (knock on wood).

Really just clean the glass once a week...

Haven't needed to do a water change yet, since I just put in 4 tiny fish a week ago. Skimmer is getting out nice hard material, but it's nothing compared to the size of the collection cup. Probably clean out every other week.

ATO is a blessing too... never had one before. Gotta love not having to top off daily with pitchers...

Your DT is quite large so you hopefully won't have aggression issues. However, assuming they are all healthy-looking, you could put the 4 tangs (other than the yellow-bellied blue) together in the 55 at the same time or split them up 2 and 3 in the 55 and a 40 to see if they all get along. This way, they can get used to each other while still settling in and recuperating from transportation. No territories will exist.

You could then put the rest of the fish together in the other 40. This saves you one QT in reserve in case you need it.

Hey Frank,

The Yellow and Yellow Bellied Blue along with the Black Ice Clown I've had for years.

I don't want to chance anything with them in the 55. After I get the other fish into QT, I'm going to run some Prazi on them as well. Just to be safe ;)

This will be the only time I'm using the 55, 40s and 20 at the same time. Hopefully I won't need a hospital tank (Knock on wood). If I do, I'll need to run and pick up another 10 or 20 gallon :/

I'm a little worried that the Tomini I added to the display a few weeks ago is getting established. I mean he's only in there with 3 Pajama Cardinals. Hopefully when the Chevron goes in, they'll play nice. I hope the tank is big enough and all the other tangs going in at the same time diffuse any tension.
