Beware of SeaJay!!!

Seriously, the dude has issues which I can't quite put into words other than to say that he'll make you go broke.

Of hell no don't get me wrong, you'll learn more from him and his minion than from most anywhere else, but it's not cheap.

No, he won't rip you off, and he won't even ask to borrow money from you that you know will never be repaid, but what he will do is far far more heinous... HE'LL MAKE YOU A BETTER DIVER, THEN PUT YOU INTO A SUPERIOR RIG, THEN POINT YOU TO WHERE YOU CAN BUY SAID RIG!!!

As of this afternoon, I'm the proud new owner of a Halcyon Eclipse-30 BP/W with a #6 integrated weight... Oh, and I'm now broke as hell too. :D

Love ya, mean it!

See, you're already screwed again. A 30lb wing wont hold double steels, now you'll need to buy yet another wing again soon.....:blown:
:lolspin::lolspin::lolspin:

Congrats on the purchase, buddy. :)

Don't worry - I put a fat check in the mail to you yesterday for all of the work you did at the GA Aquarium. Between that and selling your Cressi BC, you're still waaaaay ahead of the game.

...For now. :D

...And for what it's worth, *I* didn't make you buy cool gear - *you* made you buy new gear. :) You outgrew your BC in a matter of months.

It didn't hold doubles anyway - which is exactly where you're headed, if you want to cave and wreck. :)

The bp/wing was agreeably a lot of money, but it's a system that will grow with you, no matter what kind of diving you do... So years and thousands of dives later, you'll still own it, and it'll still be as good (or better) than the first time you dove it.

Alternatively, if you ever get out of scuba (ack!) then you'll be able to sell it for nearly what you paid. BP/wings don't generally depreciate much - they're always in demand, don't change from year to year, and are so rugged that they don't really ever get old and dead like a BC does, even after a couple of years.

Don't worry, man... It was a great investment. :)

Ask Doug or Andrew or Zach to make sure you get the literature on how to fit it correctly.

A DIR-F ("Fundies") course will REALLY nail your adjustments perfectly. :)

Dammit man, I should have shot my computer while I had the chance yesterday before "diver07" jinxed me oin regards to upgrades and such...

Ummm, I just got off the phone w/ Andrew again and have decided to go ahead and UPGRADE to the Infinity system most specifically for the padding, but also because it's the bestestest system that Halcyon manufacturers. He says it's far easier to adjust for doubles and drysuits, which is it's value... If I added the system later, it would have cost me double, so what the hell right..?

Halcyon Infinity-30 = $865

Andrew is tossing in the knife and sheath though, so that does save me a few $$.

oops, didn't mean to post....

Wow...

I haven't seen the Infinity system yet (it's brand new), so I'm looking forward to seeing yours. :)

Wouch - pricey! :) You're still ahead of the game, though... :)

Infinity --> http://www.halcyon.net/bc/single/infinity

The system comes with enough "extras" to make it worthwhile for the $120 upgrade, so I figured I may as well just go for it... I also have a buddy on his way over here right now to buy $125 worth of coral, which perfectly offsets the additional cost.

The way in which I have managed to buy this, I'm only actually out *maybe* $75 out of pocket that wasn't budgeted for. Every other penny has come from quick sales of corals and other non-essential stuff. SeaJay, obviously the added "bonus" that you paid me made this possible at this time, because that was a sizable chunk of it. Thanks again buddy! :)

ACCCKKK!!!! Are you freaking serious?!?!?!?! OK step back. You can get TWO entire QUALITY systems - alum plate, steel plate, single wing, doubles wing w/harnesses (and yeah with a $20 POS knife) for nearly same price! Are you buying this at RIPOFFS-R-US? Really I could care less what anyone spends on their hobbies but I think you are getting SCREWED! Also the infinity is completely new, I haven't even seen a review on it yet - for the guy to say it's the best thing seems a bit off.....

Oh, btw, you don't need padding....

1) Halcyon is the same price everywhere, due to price controls.

2) I bought it from Extreme-Exposure.

The rationale for the Infinity upgrade is most specifically the shoulder pads, because I was pretty badly bruised after a week of diving the same rig at the Georgia Aquarium. I have very little shoulder mass due to an extreme lack of muscle tissue in my shoulders that I was graced with at birth. It sucks, but I deal with it!

Part of the price increase was the integrated #6 weith that sits within the rear channel, alleviating the need for any side mounted weights for freshwater, and very littale extra weight for salt. And the back pad will be nice when the water temp is 80+ and I don't feel like wearing a wetsuit.

I have zero interest in an aluminum plate, so I went for the #6 stainless plate. Coupled with the #6 integrated back weight, I'll be spot on for my #12 needs w/ a 5mil suit and AL80 in freshwater.

I did look at Dive-Rite and OMS, and while substantially lower in price, I didn't care for a few of their features. I like the Halcyon donut wing design the best, so why not just stick with the complete system and be done with it..? The lifetime bladder warranty is a pretty nice feature to have as well.

It's a $23 knife thank you very much! :D

FWIW: I completely agree that the price is stupidly high, but I'm willing to pay for quality 1 time. 2 months ago I dropped well over $3k on a new Samsung LED TV & BluRay home theater system, because it was the best of the best, and that's what I wanted!

Hey, as long as you're happy :bounce2:

Actually I like the Deep Sea Supply gear, but that's me.
I wouldn't have said jack but when you posted the price my head almost popped!

Quality gear for sure, it will last a lifetime.

Oh yeah, a buddy of mine has the Samsung 56" LED, that thing is sick!

One of the guys that SeaJay and I dove w/ at the Georgia Aquarium had DSS gear, and I too really liked it, but I wasn't able to remember the brand to be able to look it up... His rig was the closest to the Halcyon, and thus far nicer than any Dive-Rite or OMS gear that I had ever seen. He also has his rig setup w/ the Miflex hoses, which I'm probably going to gravitate too.

That's the key right there; I'm happy that it will last a lifetime! :)

His would be a 55", and yeah it's way sick isn't it..? The stuff that these systems will do is so far ahead of the closest competitors' TV's, that it's hard to imagine that Samsung was able to keep things so secretive during the development phase. I bought the 46" because I didn't have a wall large enough for the 55.

To me, the simpler the better. I carry a lot of crap underwater (my camera is huge) and having as little clutter as possible is what I strive for. My stuff has to be able to withstand a lot of abuse too. I've tried many systems including Halcyon and Dive-Rite, and finally settled with this:

And this bladder:

It is surprisingly comfortable, very light, compact (this is also top of my list because I fly to most of my dive sites) and durable.

Hey Luis, OMS has a wing recall :eek2: that I just saw this morning on TheDecoStop. Better check it out, not sure if yours is on list. Sent my buddy who dives the 60lb version of that wing an email about it this morning.

Tim's right about the price controls... That's one of those things that kinda ****es me off about the scuba industry as a whole. My favorite brand names - Halcyon, ScubaPro, Apeks... None of them are beyond the price control problem in the industry. In fact, Halcyon and ScubaPro are perhaps the WORST in the industry. Unfortunately, they're also my favorite gear...

No doubt - more than $800 for a rig is definitely pricey - more than $100 over the top-of-the-line BC offerings. However, I don't know of a better way for a first-timer to purchase a bp/wing than by purchasing a full system, from EE (the heart of DIR and cave country), with Halcyon's trademark lifetime warranty. That Tim can actually stop by the factory for service and alterations when he passes through High Springs is kinda tops too. :)

Could he have purchased something less pricey? Of course... Then, that can also be said about the guy that just purchased a Ferrari... :)

The fact that Doug and Andrew both took a lot of their valuable time to discuss things with me in great detail when I stopped at EE a couple of weeks back, without ever having the expectatoins of selling me a full rig or anything over $100 total was well worth the additional costs in and of it's own.

Doug even went so far as to make sure that I had his personal cell # and email addy in the event that I ever felt the need to contact him after hours or while he's away. I was told that if I ever had any questions about anything diving related, that he wanted me to feel free to always be able to reach out to him. This is precisely the same thing that you (SeaJay) did for me from day-1, and we've both seen huge growth in my abilities because of it. :)

I can buy whatever I want from anyone, but I greatly prefer to pay for exceptional service, rather than simply being viewed as a "line item sale".

I completely agree. It's refreshing to see that at a shop, and at a shop where the gear offerings (while not cheap) are undoubtedly industry-leading. Walking in to EE is a shock for most people who've never been in a DIR-friendly shop.

Their training is that way, too... Wait until you get to have one of these guys for a Fundies weekend! By Saturday night, your head will swim with the new "tools" in your mental toolbox.

Thanks, man. :) I'm flattered to be compared to the likes of a GUE instructor... Doug Maudry, even. :)

Agreed! Especially when it comes to life support equipment. I get so tired of being sold "beach toy" style gear by the 16 year-old who's got 15 dives to his name and is a PADI Instructor Trainer with 5 Gold Stars and a Tenderfoot merit badge.

The only problem with doing business with EE is that it spoils you for doing business with other shops. :)

That said, I've also found good luck with Dennis at Austin's Diving Center in Miami, FL. I use them to supply me with all of my O'Neill wetsuits (notoriously difficult to find, yet my favorite wetsuit by far).

Others worth mentioning are Dive Gear Express (good, quality gear with special attention to valves, regulators, compressors, bottles, whips, etc., with a great website) and Leisurepro (a good place when I WANT to purchase things via "line item sale" methods). I've also had good luck purchasing from Diver's Direct and Diver's Supply when I can't find what I'm looking for at Leisurepro.

Interestingly, each store has it's own very distinct personality... But EE is by far and away the best when it comes to service, real sales help, personal interaction, and warranty. Conversely, their prices I've found to be the highest in initial investment... Although probably the lowest when you consider the longevity of the gear sold there. After all, doesn't it make more sense to purchase something twice the price if you'll get five times the number of dives out of it before needing to replace it?

Not enough can be said about EE and it's people.

You earned it. :) Nice job... We all came off as the professionals that we are, and your efforts should be recognized.

You did a great job, and you should be proud of that. :)
