Man hospitalized in fish-petting incident

EAST ROCKAWAY -- A man was taken to a hospital after tangling with a venomous fish in his home aquarium, police said.

A one-spot foxface rabbitfish bit the 19-year-old aquarist Tuesday night while he was working on his fish tank in East Rockaway, said Nassau County Police Officer Thomas Brussell.

The species, known by the scientific name Siganus unimaculatus, has venomous spines on its back, according to fishbase.org, an electronic database maintained by researchers. Also called the blotched foxface rabbitfish, the fish is found in tropical seas off western Australia, the Philippines and other parts of the western Pacific Ocean.

Brussell said East Rockaway firefighters took the young man to a local hospital with a bite to his left index finger around 9:25 p.m., but information on his injuries and condition wasn't available early Wednesday.

Police would not release the man's name.

I have a foxface in my 90G -- I know they are venomous, but it really should not be a problem unless you have an allergic reaction (or if you have good reflexes to avoid the hit in the first place :)). Hope he behaves.

Defin no petting the fish! My freshwater rays always preferred hand feedings & petting. All though venomous, I never once saw any agression or fear to provoke them.

Anytime i do any in tank cleaning or rearranging I'm the one who is constantly petted by my cleaner shrimp.

So wait, was it a bite or did he get pricked? The article kind of contradicts itself and doesn't really clarify it for me. They keep saying "petting", but then go on to call it a bite.

You can only get poisoned by the top spine, right?

Ya I didnt think that it was well written myself. In the article it never really said that he "Pet" the fish, but he was" working on his fish tank". but anyhoo!!!
