Big Live Rock Problem

I had some live rock in a tank in the basement curing. Had to go out of town for a week, came home and checked the rock.

For some reason new pump stopped working, not sure for how long.

Water is black and all the rock in black. Should I try and rinse the rock off, and try and save. Or is the rock beyond saving.

sounds like alot of die off, i would rinse it and put in fresh saltwater, see how it looks, search for cooking rock, you may need to buy some more to reseed it, its not beyond saving but its going to need to be cured or cooked for a while

Sounds like the entire batch went anaerobic. Black pigment producing bacteria. A lot of the hidden animals may be destroyed.

I think there are 2 ways to think of it.

One: replace the water and continue to cook the rock.

two: Replace the water and add some more seed live rock and continue to cook the rock.

I would most likely try method one, I can not imagine you would try any other methods anyway.

I do not think there is too much to think about with this rock.

Good luck

You've basically got base rock at this point. I would buy some more rock, at the very least, to try to seed a bit of life into what you have. I might just pitch it, for that matter, or save it for some future setup that would need some base rock.

i would go that route, as a safty measure in case every thing did die off, but if not a couple more rocks not going to hurt, and it might help seed the dead rock
