BIG mistake! Now what to do...

cwegescheide

YOU have been ignored!
So I was playing around last night laying out how big my next tank willl be with some duct tape outline on the floor. Wife says "watcha doing?" I reply "This is the dimensions of the new tank that you said I could get." The look on her face told me everything I needed to know..

Somehow when I told her 84X40X25 didn't really mean anything to her. My current tank is a 90 so its a pretty big jump in size. There is a wall that I would like to put this tank in our house and she thinks its going to be too big. So she suggests to put it in the middle of the room as a devider. I don't really like that idea at all. For 1 the electricty would have to be ran for it and it would kindof destroy the big open look in our great room. How the heck can I talk her into putting it where I want it? This is really a potential show stopper for either the reef of my dream OR our relationship... :D

I was thinking of "mocking something up with cardboard to get a better feel for the size of the tank/stand/canopy so she can "see" it. If I order this tank and she fights with me all the way I am NOT going to be a happy camper.

Suggestions?

just have here look on reefcentral with you. show her everyone elses projects and maybe that will excite her a little.

if that fails, just buy her something nice ;)

luckily my girlfriend loves my tanks. unfortunately she hates when i spend $$ on guitar stuff. at least i can work freely on the tank :D

Point out how many times you've given in to her and point out that if she wanted to put an 84" tank in-wall, you'd let her. works for me.

Hmmm times I've given in to her... hmmmmm.... hmmm Well I might be in trouble...

I guess I will have to be REALLY SWEET to her for a while and then say "oh honey, about the new tank... Can I please put it there?"

She's big into Fun-Shui.. She says it will disturb the Chi in our house... Damn Asians.. ;) I thought water was a good thing.. I'm going to have to read up on this Fun-shui thing and come up with a compelling arguement.

I'd make the mock-up and then the two of you can discuss the best place to put it. She may have some very useful input that will improve the final project - try out her suggestions too and you might be surprised that something you thought would be awful is actually a great idea (or, she might see the result and change her mind to agree with you).

I don't see why bribery or subterfuge will help the situation. :)

Uh-oh, you're on your own there. I don't know anything about Chi and Fung-Shui (it all sounds like such a bunch of weird nonsense to me,lol - I guess I'm kind of a tomboy). The concept of asking for anything is pretty foreign to me anyway. I figure I'm an adult, I live here and work to contribute to the household and will buy whatever I damn well please as long as the bills are paid first. My husband is very laid back and let's just say I do alot to maintain high morale though, lol.

Chris, live fish and moving water are POSITIVE Feng Shui elements. Are we talking about Cindy??? She seems reasonable to me. You can do it!!!

Acording to Master Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty, "Wind dispersed Chi, but Water contains it. Water flowing inside and remaining inside the house brings wealth into the home"

In case you didn't know it, Shui means water.

 Yeah were talkin about Cindy I just gotta get a solid iron-clad arguement ready when she starts talkin about Chi!! I'm going to plan my attack methodically before I start talkin Fun-Shui to an Asian girl (that I have to live with ;) ) I'm hoping after she see's your beautiful setup she will insist we follow thru with my plan..

Thanks for the link Mike..

Yeah Cindy is funny... If you come over to our house you will see coins in the corners of each room. Supposedly it will bring wealth into our home.. I think its cute. She's also very superstisious. Most of her things I must admit I've never heard of

just be sure you hide the RO (drain) lines really well....as well as the water change lines too...what i remember of feng shui, water is a good element in a house, especially by the front door, and it represents prosperity when placed correctly in the house , however, mcuh like a toilet, water leaving the house or pool represents a drain or negative aspects toward chi, and in the case of water=money and prosperity, well there is no reason to point out the fact that this is not a cheap hobby..LOL

but i would certainlt go with a cardboard layout of the tank...it will also help her decide if the location she chose is correct or incorrect as well...

You could build the frame out of PVC to the direct dimentions. An open PVC frame would be less scary than a refridgerator box. But if you did make a mock up out of cardboard, and took Mike126's advice, at least you'd have a place to sleep when she came home and found it!

That is kind of cute...and interesting. Maybe I should go sprinkle money all over this house because I surely need something to bring some wealth in here, lol. I would go ahead and do the mockup and also explain the issues with electricity and overflows, etc. that arise with the room divider. It might also help if you explain that it means alot to you to set this up the way you have been planning and that it would also mean alot to have her support. You can also mention how many ooh's and ahh's that bad boy is going to get once it's in-wall. In-walls are awesome. She is by all accounts a reasonable person so I'm sure you can persuade her without all the tricks mentioned here. I find it annoying how many men think buying a woman XX will solve the problem and that everytime we get mad it must have something to do with PMS, lol.

Unfortunatley its not going to be in-wall. If it was there would be no issues with the Chi. :) "She is by all accounts a reasonable person" Obviously you havent met Cindy!!! Yeah I think the moc up with PVC might be a better idea and less ugly.

:D

Well if she's very Fung Shue or whatever then tell her the rest of the room needs to be worked around that. I mean hey it's water! That's an "element"... move the couches around, put candles in corners, hang a dead yak from the ceil... wait that's something else.. but yeah, don't have her think of the new tank as just a new object in the room, have her think that it's also time to redecorate/rearrange the rest of the room/house!

Oh and I'm all for a large cardboard mock up of the tank.
