Big shroom is spilling his guts :|

I was a bit slow to get the pic below. The whole process looked far more "œdramatic"; the guts stretched much further and some slime were dropped that attached to my SPS :/

I changed from 14 to a 20k 150W bulb almost a week ago. Could that be what caused it?

They do that when they are stressed... So the light change probably didn't cause it, unless it happened shortly after you changed the light (not a week after).

Did you add anything, or stir something up? Maybe chemical warfare between corals?

Another possibility.... Now that I think about it, is that its looking for food... I've heard of some corals expelling guts so they and using their guts to grab at near by food that they couldn't reach by normal means. But I don't think this happens very often at all.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I don't add anything other than balling+ to my tank. I've been doing that for over a year, and I have dosing pumps doing it for me automatically. This can't have caused it. It is also over a week since I did the last water change and I can't remember the last time I had my hands in the tank.

It is interesting that you mention that he could be looking for food. I used to feed them shrimp about twice a week. It is a few months since I stopped doing this though. Maybe he's just hungry :)

The Discosoma santithomae (bubble mushroom, caribbean rhodactis, st thomas mushroom) I harvest in the wild behave the same way when picked, it is stress induced and the usually suck the "spaghetti" back in.

why are you replacing a bulb that is 3-4 mos old? Just wondering.

I don't have any supplementary light in my fixture and wanted a bluer look.

Hmmm, I am not really sure what could have stressed it but it looks fine today. I just returned home now from a trip; that's why I was a bit concerned "“ I left the morning after making this thread. This the biggest drawback with the hobby IMO: Worrying when away from the tank (although this trip was very short :) )

Your before and after pic really shows the difference in color. Just look at the wall in the background, it's even more obvious there. I like your 14k look better. What brand bulb was that?

Both bulbs are from Elos.
The 14k used to be labeled 20k, but for the US market this changed recently: They now call the old 20k for 14 and have made a new bluer 20k. In Europe, the old bulb I used is still labeled 20k.

Personally, I prefer the higher K look. :)
