hey guys, im starting some research on building a large tank, 540g. couple questions im looking to get answered are, plumbing and filtration. and weather this size tank would be big enough for a small bit of reef with corals, as well as a small shark. or stay one way or the other, full reef or shark. thanx for any input.

You've come to the right place! Let's start by you giving us some more information about what you want specifically, and what you plan on doing.

I have been looking at building a tank. im interested in keep a bamboo cat. from what i have read ther not reef safe, but seem to be mostly bottom dwellers. im thinking bout building tank 3ft deep 3ft wide and 8ft long. total of appox. 540g display. my thinking is to incorperate a shelve bout 6-8inch off the tank floor maybe 2ft long and elevating the rock structure. leaving the floor open sand. kinda imatating a ledge if you will.

as far as the coral side, I have mostly softies i can propagate. if the suggestions warrant risk to corals. from ther if and only if the shark spends 90-95% of its time on bottom would i think about trying stonies too. with the filtration would really like to if possible make a esturary of sorts.
