go ahead Mike, i love all anthias, no matter which species. Although there some that are better looking then others, i love lyretails, they are one of my favorite.

I agree with Julio. I use to be a coral only guy and now I have over 45 fish in my system...mostly anthias of various species. Just plain cool fish!:) :) :) :)

No, sargassum isnt bad if you prune it frequently. If you let it grow, it can take over your tank. It's a good means of nutrient export.

For those who've been looking for males for years... they're in stock at liveaquaria here.

And for those who haven't seen them... here is a shot of my male... king of all my anthias now...

Copps,
Is the male more pinkish? Can you describe the actual difference in coloration and pattern? Thanks.

Males have the striated patterns all over thier bodies, While do females only display it on their bellies.

The male is very striking, and quite different from the female even under anthias standards. The male really has no yellow, whereas the female has a lot. As Julio said they have a striated pattern that is very cool to see and appreciate... almost a mosaic of colors. Below is a closeup of the tail to show the colors... the male has the pink, but also the orange-red color that is mixed in... on top of that the aqua blue that outlines the dorsal and tail fin is icing on the cake...

Hope that helps...

here is a closeup of the male tail...

And another shot of one of the females for comparison...

Ahh, now I see the main difference! Is there a chance for the male to turn into female? LOL, I dont know if it works that way. Hell, if humans can do it, don't see why a fish can't:)

I'd take that as a joke, but I bet there is a doctor in Beverly Hills that would do it for the right price...:D

This may sound funny, but... let's see those males!:p

Off topic... anyone coming here to DC for MACNA next month?

How do y'all rate these guys on a hardness scale relative to other anthias? Are they as hardy as lyretailed anthias? What about on the hardness scale period? I tried some squareback anthias and lost them all within a week. My lfs gets different species in regularly. They never seem to eat and mostly look like crap or dead within a week. This isn't a knock on my lfs which does a good job with their fish.
