Bio-wheels?

In Deep Water

In Memoriam
Ok, so Ive got 60lbs stuffed into a 30gallon long. I still have my emperor 400 runnning power filter and wheels. Ive received some great advice so far and some of it involved taking out the bio-wheels. Also, can I put LR in the gray plastic cartridge?

Ive had about 42lbs in there for 11days. The other 18lbs for like 3 days. I also did a 15% water change when adding the new rock.

Wait 6 weeks to take out the wheels? Im a little confused. I had to do the water change b/c of water loss due to reconfiguration.

If its only been 10 days I wouldnt worry to much about taking them out. Go ahead and do it now though, dont wait.

I removed my bio wheels after a month and has no ill effects. I was going to add RR & LS to the filter bottom but I use it to run carbon & phosban instead. Works great & my tank is doing wonderful.
Your LR & LS will have the BB you would have had in the biowheels.
Good Luck! :D

From what I was told once they are full they will turn into a nitrate factory. I was told by the LFS at the time to leave them in no matter how gross they got because I needed the BB. But, many and I mean many, people here on RC told me to get them out ASAP because I didn't need them if I had LR. So, very reluctantly I removed them. 2 months later my tank is thirving and looks great. I've had no problems w/ my params and I continue to use the carbon filters that silde inside and I use the media chambers for phosban. I was told by people here on RC to add RR & LS to creat a natural filter in the Emperor but my bioload is heavy so I run the carbon & phosban instead.
I hope some of this healps. :) Good Luck!

Bio wheels definately create a nitrate factory over time. Nitrate is not harmful to the fish, but if your planning on adding any corals etc. they will not appreciate the extra nitrate in the water.

If your live rock was fully cured when you put it in there, it won't need as long to cycle as un-cured or pre-cured rocks. Theoretically, it may not cycle at all, but in reality, it might need 2-3 weeks.

Take out the bio-wheels. As long as you have cured LR, you don't need them.
