Biocube 29 into SH tank

Hi!

Live rock, plants or macro for hitching, a heater or chiller depending on where you live & how hot the tank will run. (you will get a good idea of that when you have the tank cycling with the light on for a while) A themometer, sand if you are not going BB, etc etc

The basics really. You don't need special lights, you can get away without a skimmer although I recommend it, pretty basic little set-up will get you by nicely! =)

If you have any questions, fee free to ask!

NanoGurl how hot does your BC get? Do you run a chiller?
Krazeekiddie would you run a tunze 9002 or a nano remora?

SH in a Bio-Cube

SH in a Bio-Cube

I have a M/F pair of Hippocampus Reidi in a 29G Bio-Cube, and they are doing well. I'll post a picture or two later today.

We use the stock Bio-Cube return pump and lights. After fighting hair algae due heavy feeding and lack of good circulation, I recently added a Koralia nano-powerhead in the right rear of the tank. This creates a swirling effect around the 35 pounds of Live Rock which forms an island in the tank.

This island has plenty of "hidey holes" for the seahorses to get out of the flow and meditate. ;) We have two plastic plants, some natural saw grass and numerous polyps in there for hitching posts.

One important upgrade we did was a Sapphire Aquatics BC-29R Skimmer in chamber 2 to improve overall water quality. Tank temp ranges between 74 and 77 degrees.

As you will see when I post photos, this is a community tank. We have two black occellaris, a single royal gramma and a pair of twin spot gobies. None of the other fish bother the seahorses...in fact they watch them with interest as the horses "graze" the LR between feedings.

This may not work for everyone, but here is our feeding regimen: First we feed the community a frozen food, such as Marine Cuisine, which contains small mysis shrimp. We give the other fish 5 minutes to consume their fill. Then I turn off the pump and powerhead.

The SH are trained to come to the front of the tank when the pump goes off. They look for their PE mysis shrimp and I give them 15-20 minutes to eat what they can. I tried to set up a feeding station, but I couldn't get them interested. Instead, the SH just eat their mysis off the sandbed.

The other fish do not try to steal the PE mysis apparently because they have already been fed. (or maybe just well-mannered)...

The seahorses are able to get plenty of shrimp during this time, which I repeat three times a day: 11:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

After 15-20 minutes, I turn the pumps back on, and any excess shrimp go into the water column where it is then eaten by the fish or later on the LR by grazing seahorses.

I add copepods to our main tank for the mandarinfish, so I add a few to the Bio-Cube for additional treats for the SH.

This works well for us. We are considering the addition of a M/F Hippocampus Erectus (from the same breeder) in the coming weeks...

That's my exact setup-lr no skimmer frequent h2o changes and ghost shrimp once a day- I give them about 10 each day and let them as well as my pipes hunt them.
Knano in there for flow.

Lightsluvr, sounds like you have an awesome set up, and i would love to see pictures of it when you get the chance. Right now i cant decide between finding a used sapphire (sad he stopped making them b/c he was local for me) or getting a tunze 9002.

Gasman how often do you do a water change?

We do 10% water change twice a week. I siphon the LR carefully when doing water changes. Phosphate reading usually is 0.02 to 0.03.

Here are two photos:

I am in the process of slowly cranking up the Magnesium level above 1500 in an effort to kill the hair algae.

Tank temp reaches 77 with all (stock) lights running. Uusually I open the front hatch on hood when the 10K light is running. I leave back door on hood open 24/7. Temp gradually dips to 74 at night.

Room temp is steady 70 degrees.
