biopellets and cyano treament

I started biobeads (similar to biopellets) last week (in a nextreef modified reactor with a mag3 pump)
I was wondering... I have a lot of cyano in the tank... can I make a cyano treament or will it be a bad thing for the biobeads?
should I just succion out much of the cyano instead and wait to for the biobeads to activate?

Let the pellets do their thing. If you want to push it along use some MB7 or start dosing a little vodka.

A cyano treatment like chemiclean will kit the bacteria. Don't do it unless if you do it a week or two before the start of BP.

Let the BP have a chance to do their job. What you want is for the bacteria on the biopellets to out compete the cyano.

I suction out the most cyano I could (some I cant reach ) and wait for the biopellets to do the rest

josee1013, how did your cyano problem turn out? I've been considering biopellets, but I keep reading about people getting cyano when running biopellets. I have some cyano now (without biopellets) and certainly don't want to do anything to make it worse. Did yours end up clearing up on its own? Or did you have to take other measures? Take care,

the cyano is gone at the moment... cant tell if it's because of the pellets or not...

Cool, thanks for sharing... The cyano concern, as well as the idea that chaeto in my (future) fuge would die, are the only two things holding me back from trying biopellets. Maybe I should just stick with a fuge - I have 0 NO3 and PO4 right now anyway. Take care,

I have a refugium full of cheato and it's doing great... I dont understand what you are concern about?

Good to hear. Many have reported that their chaeto starts dying off b/c there aren't enough nutrients in the water to keep it alive - maybe you have a lot more nutrients (feed a lot or something)? Take care,

i am still fighting with cyano....

i decided to introduce prodibio along with the biopellets...

i just tested phosphates and i am at .05 ppm on the hanna digital tester...

will the cyano eventually starve? i am holding off on feeding the reefbooster from prodibio since it could feed the cyano...

how long do i have to wait for it to go away?

you may need to vacuum the sandbed with the next water change or 2. Sometimes the nutrients leach out of the sandbed or even rock, and feed the cyano or other algae even though your water is clean. Be patient with it, it will eventually die off. My 2 cents.
