Excuse my rant....

After coming back to the hobby after a lengthy hiatus I feel like the hobby has turned upside down. A nice fungia that might have been $50+/- five or six years ago is now $175+ because some asshat has stuck a name on it "Tangerine Dream Fungia 1" Frag $80" Will consider offers on the mother colony over $225. I saw a coral the other day go for almost $500 that six years ago I could easily get for $75.

Did everyone add blue food coloring to their water. To say how impressive your coral looks under 5000watts of blacklight...my nose hair would fluoresce brilliantly under some of the lighting that I see.

Lol this topic has been argued a lot lately. If you want to add fuel to the fire add the word lineage and it gets interesting.

It I hard for me to pay $125 for a "God of Lava" shroom that is the same shade of red as the fully covered shroom rock at say...Pet Club that is $30. I couldn't care less that it had been handed down by so-and-so.

And the ridiculous lighting, if I put those intense blue lights above a white poodle can I sale it as a "Glowing Poodle" for $5k?

Seems like it's started by the online stores someone thinks they can grow it and sell it then it same thought down the ladder untill the bubble pops and the price on a item is not worth so much like it did with zoas.

Me personally would never buy or support this. I know it's mean but calling people on it but then others get upset for calling someone out on it.

It's your freedom of speech but when someone else is not happy with it your a bully for saying the truth since that truth hurts.

Yep, it reminds me of the Beanie Baby craze years ago. Suddenly your $7 stuffed animal isn't $300 any more, now it's $3 because the market dried up and now it's saturated.

I'm old school lineage is important for me. I want a true lineage coral when I buy it. Not a mariculture one.

I understand the point of lineage how it provides an idea of the possible color and hardiness that can be expected. The premiums being added to them is getting pretty crazy.

That would be the only reason I buy named coral. The coral I will spend good money on is purely the ones I want to see in my tank. That's the only time I appreciate leneage. I still will never buy the super high priced stuff. Most Of My Favorites Can Be found for less than $30 a frag.

Unfortunately people see places like reef raft make money and want to be a mini version. I dunno... I'm here for the small amount of enjoyment I get from this hobby. Especially with the issues I battled with source water. I used to not understand why people bailed so often from the hobby. Now I don't understand why I still do it.

With the current trend of the hobby I see big changes on the horizon. Unfortunately some of them are not good changes. Especially the ones that are hurting our local fish stores. In my opinion our Lfs are one of the best parts if the hobby. I love hitting the stores to see what's new. Instead of a hobby people act like it's a small business venture.

Nope. Some at one point years ago were, while others are freshly harvested from the ocean. Stability in aquaria isn't typically demonstrated by the latter.

Your exactly right. If you bought a poodle from a renowned breeder you could expect that dog to have very predicable looks and behavior. If you trapped a wolf and brought it home the behavior and health would be very unpredictable.

My point is that you are paying for the predictability of the poodle when you buy into the lineage. It is not worth $300 for a 1/2" frag for me, I'd much rather see what the $20 wild piece turns into.

The only time I think it is worth to get a pricey coral is when a coral is known to grow half an inch a year like the purple monster and stn when you look at it the wrong way. Haha. The last coral topic with issue here had priced the coral like it was back when there was the chalice craze several years ago. We all eventually grow out of it. Not too long ago I saw the Jedi mind trick montipora priced at $98 an inch frag at the vivid aquarium website. They finally took it off at some point. Lol. My favorite coral is the green slimer which sells as low as $5 a frag. As a colorblind person, green pops out more to me than any other colors. Everyone has their own preference. I tend to ignore reefers more focused on trendy pricey things. They themselves become trends and leave the hobby eventually. Buy corals because you like them. Most non reefers can't tell pricing. I can wow people more with my 14" colony of green slimer than a 1/2inch frag of rr wolverine. The best shots are not macro shots of overpriced frags, it's colony pictures.
