i saw a black tang at my LFS
it didnt have a salfin or a long noise or the white diamond on its tail, but it was all black
it almost looked like a blue tang or a yellow tang without the sail fin or long nose but all black
it was price 50$ and i really want to buy it because i know black tangs are aroun 500$ but i dont know if it was the 500$ black tang
what else could it be?

It could be almost any number of stressed out tangs, they tend to get very dark when they are unhappy.

it didnt have a salfin...it almost looked like a blue tang or a yellow tang without the sail fin or long nose but all black

I'm confused about the 'sailfin' part. If it's a zebrasoma tang, it will have the 'sailfin' that you're talking about. I agree with the others that it's a good bet that it's a scopas for $50. All zebrasoma tangs are considered sailfins...for instance, a yellow tang is also known as a yellow sailfin. Puprle is a purple sailfin etc etc. Most people only refer to the 2 sailfins as 'sailfins', but they all are. :fish1:

it doesnt have the sailfin, it has a small top fin like the blue tang
it was completely black, no other marks and it didnt seem that stressed out in the tank. they have had it for a month and a half and it hasnt changed color, and its very active.
i would think my LFS would be dumb enough to make mistakes on rare fish
any other suggestions on what it could be?

i will bet it is a scopas tang

-notice the black tang has longer snout.. difference in form also. don't pay $500 for black scopa

body shape looks exactly like a naso tang except for the tail and it was completely black

If it looks like a naso tang, then it probably is. I just saw a thread on here not that long ago (1 week maybe 2) where someone had a naso tang that was completely black. I had never heard of this, but they had pics. It will eventually change colors and look like a naso. If it is in fact for your 29, no matter what tang it is, it would be too big for your tank.

+1 on getting a pic!

Please tell me that this isn't for your 29

Yet another statement I couldn't agree with more. Not only is it not a fish that should be in a 29, it's not a good fish for a newb...or a newly set up tank. (again, no matter which tang it is.) If you're not a newb, then that's just for people that ARE, that are reading here. You posted this in the New to the hobby section as well, so I'm kinda figuring...

I can tell you for sure, it is a naso that will eventually have normal color. I personally had one that was solid black. It is now a naso blonde and it just took a few weeks to settle in the display. It was all black for 2 months and was the whole time it was in QT. He now looks normal.
