Blackthunda77's 80Gal Shallow Reef Build

One chapter ends, a new one begins. Finally found the new tank!

Just read through this whole thread. Awesome tank, makes me want a shallow rimless. I am builiding a similar suspended canopy for my 60 cube to hold 2- 2 dual bulb T5s and my Radion in the center. What suspension kit/system did you use that could support the weight? I dont know if i trust the Radion hanging kit I am using now. Also, did you use drywall anchors or did you fasten the canopy direclty to the studs in the ceiling?

Wow, just finished reading all 21 pages of your thread! Good job! Really enjoyed it. Who is the maker of your new tank? Does it have any center braces? It looks beautiful. Your achilles and pink tail will love it!

I dont know the manufacturer as i bought the tank used. All i know is that this was one of the tanks at the fountainbleu hotel in miami before they swapped out all the tanks to cylinders. And no, it has no centerbrace. Its 3/4" glass. I can probably go rimless if i wanted to but i dont think i want to bother with removing the trim. Usually the glass edges under the trim are in rough shape and this tank is built like a tank. It would probably take me a whole weekend to remove the top trim. lol

Common John, thats an awesome tank, where are the pearly whites?

And the next build thread begins. Take lots of pics and tell us all the details.

I want 100,000 views on this one. ( ;

Thats pretty much as much of a smile your gonna get outta me, unless yo make me laugh. lol.

We think alike. I wound up building a wooden frame to cover the top trim. Hides the mesh screen well.

Yea im planning to. I just need to find someone with a coral saw and some experience. Ive never done it and i dont want to use that favia as my test subject. :)

Guess where you can get this done?, and yes ide like a piece also, aleways loved that coral.

BTW- i did get a jebao from someone on here and it ROCKS!! (so far, @ weeks)

I don't have a coral saw, but will gladly purchase a frag of your Favia. I lost mine to low mag recently. I tried dipping it to no avail. Please keep me in mind if and when you frag it.

simmer down now guys, lol. Theres enough to go around. Ill probably cut that guy in half now that its gotten so big. Keep half for me for the new tank and frag the other half. Im planning on fragging pretty much everything in the tank during the move. Selling some frags and keeping a couple frags of each for myself to seed the new tank. Im planning on cooking the current rock cuz ive been dealing with some hydroids and bubble algae and i plan to either chuck the rock and get new, or just keep the rock and do some treatments of muriatic acid and then some lanthnum chloride baths. Im leaning towards the latter since its a good amount or rock and would probably be enough for half of the new tank. Planning on going minimalistic again with alot of swimming space and open sand.

Since i wont be able to start this build for a little while i decided to plan everything out in advance. Heres a little sketchup i did of what direction i think im going. I plan to make a minimalistic stand. Mainly just a frame, wrapped in plywood which will be skinned with a dark ash veneer. The boards will be held in place with magnets so all pieces will be able to be removed for maintenance. The top trim im making with a 2" wide piece of wood to hid the plastic trim and to match the stand. The counter top will be of poured concrete. Ive always wanted to try my hand at that and am planning on doing it to the outside kitchen so i figured id test it out on my stand which will be smaller.

The overflow covers im planning on making them based on the reef savvy cover. I posted a thead in the general forum but people there are not much help. So if anyone you have these covers and wouldnt mind sending me some pics of different angles i would appreciate it.

This is what im talking about.

John, you are always welcome to check mine out. My tank has that overflow cover (without the logo). The design is simple. Shoot me a PM on Friday to remind me and I'll take some nice pics for you! If you have access to a CNC machine, or someone that will make the cuts for you, looks fairly simple to assemble. Its just a 2 sided box with an innner frame that sits in the overflow.

Consider that a good faith deposit for that frag, LOL!

Started designing the sump. Its similar to what i have now, drain, skimmer, fuge, return. right now i have s standard 55 gal but im thinking im going to build my own custom sump this time from acrylic. 48x24x16. Same footprint as my current tank but my rimless is way to purddy to turn into a sump. lol

That is very similar to how I have mine. I added one more more egg crate section right after the fuge before the return pump. That floss there actually grabs more detritus then the first one.

Are you planning to run filter floss in egg crate area? If so I would make the joining panel lower than sump wall height. Or add slits for if floss gets clogged.
