Blackthunda77's 80Gal Shallow Reef Build

This is a pic of the 36" reef brite

And this is a picture of the single 20 watt multichip. As you can see, the reef brite is barely any brighter if at all. However the multichip gives off more if a shimmer since it is a single light point

If any if you guys are in the area your more than welcome to come by and check it out.

the LED heatsink looks just like a cpu heatsink except slightly modified lol. how's the LED going so far? is it better than the reefbrite?

Your tank is really coming along nicely with all the corals in there now. When those minicolonies turn into major colonies, this will be epic. Very nice indeed. Much needed inspiration for my build. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours. I love the way you showed restraint with your rock work. Something I'm dreading with mine, LOL!

Thats basically all that it is. However, anything larger than i 20watt chip i would incorporate a cpu fan or a much larger heat sink.

Thanks for the Kind words rovster. Hopefully your right and in a year or so it will start to fill in and there will be more to look at, lol. I dont really like the look of frag plugs glued to rocks but i know i have to be patient and let things grow in.

John, hows the heat dispersion with the LED being on the heatsink? Im thinking about reusing some of my leftover cpu heatsinks from my computer build.

The heat sink i have is working fine. On the first day i noticed the led would shut off on its own and i attribute that to over heating. i could barely place my hand on the heatsink it was so hot. But what i found was that mounting the driver directly on the bracket next to the heat sink and have the driver in that crappy driver case they provided all attributed to that. I now removed the driver from the case and i placed it further away from the heatsink(right now its just sitting on my canopy but i intend to lengthen the wires and install it on a board under my stand) and its been running like that since saturday with no turning off and the heat sink is barely hot to the touch. Based on my readings though you want the heatsink/fan combo to be rated up to or above the wattage of the bulb. This 20watt chip is effectively cooled by this size heatsink passively without a fan. Anything bigger like a 50 or 100watt i would definately recommend active cooling with a fan. Something like this.

MP40wES

MP40wES

Ok so i finally did it, i finally saved up enough cash to snap up an MP40 from the for sale forums. I know some of you guys are saying "whats the big deal? they are not THAT expensive". However, with my wife back in school and pretty much not working we made a deal to curb our sepnding, especially me on my tank. The deal is no buying fish stuff this year unless the money comes from selling off current fish stuff or my extra freelance web services, lol :hammer: So im trying to hold my end of the deal up.

Thanks to doggydoc who is buying my yasha goby/shrimp pair, silverjo who is buying 2 of my koralia 1400's and ladybug who is actually buying my terrarium i posted (its going in her science classroom. im psyched about that because its going to a great cause!) and along with a couple other terrarium related things i sold on craigslist i have been able to save up enough to not come out of pocket.

With the wife in school this year its going to be a bit tough but i dont intend on having to have to sell off the tank to make ends meet, God Willing. It brings both of us too much joy and is a statement of our personalities as soon as guests walk into our condo. Ill try to have some updated pics up soon. Of the corals that are not struggling atleast,
