looking for lighting my 40breeder on a budget.

prons/cons of these comparable to any other black box?

would 2x these do the job? (it would save me $150 over the photon v2 and I could put it to use a lot more elsewhere)

OR...

would my money be better spent on something like the reefbreeders photon v2 24"??

any suggestions welcome, thanks!

I'm currently using these lights, which also go by the name viparspectra. I'm happy with my purchase so far. One of the advantages they have over the other black box lights is the built in timers and only needing one plug. I'm currently setting up a 112g tank and will be using three of these.

absolute bingo on why I like these as well...cutting down on plugs is a losing battle it seems these days with everything needed for system life support, so only 1 is a huge selling point.

I currently have 1 ocean revive t247b that I picked up locally, I love it and would like to get more, but to get 2 more new it would be over $300 and at that point it would be almost a wash to just step up to the photon v2. (I would still save ~$100 with the bloomspects)

I've never heard of this brand, but if it's the same as the Viparspectra, it's a good unit. It's basically a much less expensive version (and not quite as good looking) as the OceanRevive. The light and spread should be very, very similar. And at a much lower cost. IMHO OR need to lower their price. It's a well built fixture, but at nearly twice the price of similar fixtures.

The RB Photon V2 is a very different animal from the Bloomspect fixture or the Viparspectra or the OR. It has sunrise/sunset/moonlight control. Your corals could care less about this feature, but personally, I like having it because I'm around all day and I get to watch the tank change. The V2 also has 6 channels of light control not just 2. Is this important... not really, but if you think you can mix the colors better for your tank than Bloomspect, Viparspectra or OR, then you need this. Or if you are one of the many here who go crazy about the exact shade of white light in the tank and need it to be PERFECT, then this is the fixture you want. If not, save your money and get the Bloomspect. It should grow coral just fine! I still have an OceanRevive T247 over my frag tank (3+ years old). But if I were buying today, I'd probably get a Viparspectra. For my DT I want the bells and whistles of a RB Photon V2! It isn't better light, it's a better fixture with more controls to play with.

Pay close attention to the list of Diodes and and placement..

I there is a difference in diode placement but it could be very similar

Thanks ron for the in depth reply!

Does anyone have experience with sb reef? similar pricepoint as the photon...but 32" with timer, except usual black box design. As much as I like the spectrum selling point, not sure if it would be worth the extra $$$ over 2 bloomspects
