Blue Angel turns into a *MONSTER*

I always knew this day would come, and I am guilty of putting a non reef safe fish in too small of a tank (150 gal). But he was just a tiny baby when we got him, and it was love at first sight when the wife saw him at the LFS. I try to do things to keep my wife somewhat interested in my hobby, even when it goes against my better judgement. Whatcha gonna do right? ;)

So about a year after we got him the coral nipping began. I can live with that as I'm used to it (I have 5 dwarf angels and a Moorish Idol). Then the nipping turned into taking huge chunks out of my leathers, and obliterating any new corals I put in the tank. Hmm. 6 months later he turns into a bully after growing to be over 6 inches, chasing the dwarf angels around. HMMM! Now he's bullying my MI so bad that it has stopped eating, and just last night I saw him fighting pretty bad with the foxface. Yup, it's time for him to go!

I should have listened to my PBT 6 months ago. She has her own way of telling me when it's time for a fish to be re-homed... she leaves her "mark" on them. :spin1:

any way to set up another FO tank? If you got the space for it then all it takes is caniter filter and heater.

Wife & I will discuss that, although space is limited in our apt. I have setup a 29 gal temporary HT for once I catch him.

Because I love fish & corals so much, I really need two tanks. I'd love to setup a 300 gal FO for all my non reef safe fish, and then go back to focusing on corals again in the 150. Best of both worlds. ;) But then there's the "butterfly tank" I've always wanted, where I could put the MI. It just never ends, does it?
;)

Just to update, he killed my Moorish Idol. :mad2: Now he's trying to do the same to the foxface. My wife (the enabler) thinks he's just going thru puberty or something, and is "mad at the world".

I've got my tank all torn up, and am doing everything I can to get him out. Hopefully that will be soon. Just taking a little break to vent. I foresee a life in a tank full of triggerfish in his near future.

oh no! sorry you lost your MI, what a bummer!

Thanks Nina. I'm still pretty numb about it. :( I guess I had him for about a year, and he was doing so good. My wife thinks I should have gotten the MI out instead of the Blue Angel, but I didn't see how that would solve the overall problem. But I guess in hindsight that's what I should have done until I could get the Blue out...

Have you tried trapping him? Toss a clam on a half shell in the back of a trap, I've never had an angel resist it for more than a couple hours.

So sorry to hear about your idol :(

Holacanthus and Pomacanthus angels tend to want to rule the tank. I am not sure which one would win out if you had both, but either one is not going to tolerate similars.

it's hard to lose any fish but really awful to lose one of the hard keepers, especially after he did so well for so long. :(

Sorry about the MI they are one of my favorite fish. At least this is an excuse for another tank. Lol.

The last one I had lasted 4-5 years, and was in more of a "Butterfly tank". I think this experience has taught me they need gentle/peaceful tankmates.

I've actually got a clam inside a "one way" cave, and the wife is trying to trap him as I type this. She told me to "go away", and claims the fish is scared of me now. :spin3: I might try to build a fish trap if this doesn't work. The one I have is way too small for him.
