Blue carpet nem

This is one of the funnest threads I've been involved in for a while!

Todd, I'm just being silly with ya. But seriously, after looking at your pics I really am undecided because they are all so pretty. The thing I like about the purple LTAs is the swaying motion they make. And, it would be pretty to have one with the orange skunks. The RBTA are also beautiful, but I have a gorgeous red meat coral so I want something other than red. Todd, which is more expensive, and more available, the purple LTA or the blue carpet? One last curiosity question: you obviously love nems and know a lot about them. What is it about them that fascinates you so much! :)

Zooz, just imagine the day that you acclimate your nem. Have friends over and CELEBRATE!! :D

I have to agree with you. :)

Oh, I know you are being silly, I am too. Yea, it is hard to beat the swaying motion -- and in my 58 I have a ton of flow, so it sways a lot. Bet that red coral looks great. I had a bunch of RBTAs for a while, but sold them all -- when I save up money going to put some SPS in that tank, and they were taking up to much rock space.

The blue carpet was harder to find, and a LOT more expensive. But, purple LTAs are that easy to come by either -- though I've seen them available more often then the carpet.

Not sure if I know a lot, but have been keeping them for a while now ( 10 years ). That is a really good question. I think it comes down to the interaction b/t a pair of clowns and the anemone. Just really cool to see the clowns "snuggle" into the anemone. Plus, like you mentioned seeing the anemone sway in the current is great to watch.

Funny enough, as I am typing this I keep finding myself looking at my 58 with the PLTA and skunks. I think they are getting ready to spawn -- they are doing a dance and I can hear the female "barking". ( sounds like when an old hard wood floor creeks )

yea i cant wait...your welcome to check it out if your passin by toronto beaches area LoLL

Todd, hi again :) I'm kind of leaning toward the purple LTA and getting some orange skunks. I'm not even sure how to get two clowns and hope that they'll pair up. How did you do it? Is it 2 at the same time, with one being smaller than the other? And, I didn't know clowns make a "barking" sound--that's silly too! I wonder if they can compete with my dog Oliver, who is an Australian Heeler (he likes to bark when he is trying to herd the mailman)! :D

Additionally, I have now been reefin' for almost 3 years so for you to be doing it for 10 years is impressive. This is one of those hobbies that keeps you humbled because there's SO much to learn (part of the fun)!

Since I will be putting either the blue carpet or the purple LTA in my 58, perhaps size of the nem should seriously be considered. The blue capets get really big don't they, bigger than the pLTAs? Maybe that's another reason to choose purple vs. blue. What do you think?

Hey Zooz, maybe you should have a "Come Visit Toronto and Watch Me Acclimate My Nem" party. You're just north of me--I'll bring snacks. :D

Howdy Awe. :)
That would look really great -- a purple with orange skunks. Funny, I am not sure how to pair up clowns. :) I've always gotten lucky -- bought 2 at a time -- if possible I've gotten one bigger than the other, but that has happened about 50% of the time. Over the years I've had a mated pair of Clarkis ( in my 75 ), pair of pink skunks ( in my 58 ) pair of false percs ( in my 29 ), mated pair of GSM ( sold ), pair of true percs ( sold ), and pair of saddlebacks ( sold ). My Clarkii pair I've had for over 6 years now. I doubt they could compete with your dog, but I can hear them over my TV. :)

Actually, it has been 15 years. ;) 10 years of keeping anemones. But, yea, each week I seem to learn something new -- love it.

Considering the size of the of each anemone is a really good idea. From my understanding carpets do get bigger -- but you could always get a bigger tank when it outgrows your 58. ;) Either one would be great to have, and are hard to come by -- I would take what ever one comes availible to you first.

I was just up in Wisco a couple of weeks ago -- Door County -- had a great time.

Oh, for the size of the PLTA, here is a FTS of my 58 to give you an idea ( picture is about 3 months old -- and the right MH had just shut off. )

Oh my gosh, your purple nem is breathtaking, especially against the white sand. Your tank is really pretty Todd. That's it, I'm getting a purple nem w/2 orange skunks (let's cross our fingers and hope they pair up). I feel like a little girl on Christmas Eve, just waiting for Santa and being so excited!!! :)

And gosh yes, 15 years is a great amount of time to learn--good for you! :)

I started laughing when you said you can hear your clowns over your tv. Too funny. And yeah, Oliver can get loud---he's so darn cute though, and definitely the smartest dog I've ever owned. It's kinda scary sometimes when you see how smart he is.

Also, thank you for posting a full tank shot of your 58; it seems that few people have this size. I dearly wish I had a digi. camera so I could take some pics. It seems that everytime I have some extra money, when I could buy a camera, I end up getting something for one of the aquariums instead. Go figure.

I am glad to hear you had a good time up in Door County. It's really pretty up there. I am originally from Arizona and when I came to Wisconin I was in awe of all the water and the green. Arizona is beautiful too, but just in a very different way than Wisconsin. Door County, IMO, is a wonderful example of how beautiful Wisconsin is!

Todd, I have another question if you don't mind---what is that gold/yellow coral on the left side of your tank? I'm thinking either the lettuce coral or a montipora...

Thanks a lot. I am pretty happy with it ( need to work on the bubble algae though ) That is cute, and I know how you feel, I get excited when ever I am waiting for FedEx/UPS to drop something off. Think your tank is going to look great with the purple and orange -- I will keep an eye out for ya. :)

Too bad it was during my Junior of college, think I learned too much about tanks. ;)

When it first happened ( yesterday ) it freaked me out, didn't know what it was -- took me about 5 minutes to figure out it was the clowns. How big of a dog is he?

You're welcome -- I am really happy with that size tank. Got it about 6 years ago when my ex-wife and I moved in together -- thank god she didn't get any of the tanks. ;) Tell me about it -- I want to get a DSLR camera, but tank stuff seems to eat all my money. But, I am trying to save -- my current camera doesn't like the lights of my upstairs tank -- can never get the colors right. Hopefully I will have one before next summer when I go back out to the Tetons.

Been to Arizona a few time, it is pretty, but you are right, it is a different pretty. Grew up in MN, so I am "used" the water and green -- get up to Door about once a year ( my friend's in laws have a place up there )

It is called a ruffled ridge coral (Turbinaria sp.) got it about 4 years ago, grows pretty well, fragged it a couple of times.

This is great talking with you :) Well, first, Oliver weighs about 65 lbs. and stands as high as my knees. He is overweight because he is ALWAYS stealing the cats' food (Oliver is naughty).

Well, at least you learned about something as an undergrad.! :D

You know, I have heard of people having custody battles over their pets--you must have won regarding the water ones. I know I would put up one heck of a fight if someone wanted to take my tanks (or our cats and my son's guinea pig). No one could take Oliver--he resists if someone just tries to take him outside to go potty.

My sister and my niece live in Minnesota--Jackson.

Your tubinaria is really pretty. I don't have any sps yet because of my lights. However, someone told me that I could try either a montipora digitata or a mont. cap because they are a bit easier than some sps and don't require MH lighting.

I really like many of the LPS corals--one problem with them is that they sting if in close proximity to other corals. I'm still trying to figure out how people crowd their tanks without the corals hurting each other. I know you can put softies close to each other and some SPS, but...well, I guess I'm still learning. I would like to have many more corals but I want them all to thrive. Am I making any sense?

Hi Todd, it's time for lights out here. I just didn't want to seem rude if you write back and then I don't respond! Good night. :)
