Blue LTA -

1-15-10fts.jpg

The red/pink one is really a nice score, I have only seen them twice despite the many direct shipments that I've seen.

How deep the sandbed does everybody have?

My green LTA was monochrome faded (bleached) tan when I got it (2years ago), after about 6months in my tank it began changing to green (15k 175w mh lights), its now solid green under 20k halides. I purchased the red LTA in early December from a local reefer who had it for 2years.

That's nice!
My green doreensis did maintain alot of green, but mixed w/ beige, and disc was nowhere near as green as yours, nice.
I just saw a red LTA for first time this week, and almost got it, but was wondering if it would maintain red color so bright.
Yours looks awesome.

I had a percula pair with the green, and the female scrubbed the sand away all the way to the glass, the anemone doesnt seem to care, its foot stretches into a crack between a couple rocks at least 8in back, and its footed to the tank bottom. I put the red into a similar crack with about 2in of sand, and it didnt foot well for about 3 weeks, so I added 2in of sand on that end of the tank, it was footed down for 3 weeks but just let go and started moving again yesterday, I think I will try adding a couple more inches of sand in that front corner.

Edit---> A picture of my now green LTA from February '08

How deep the sandbed does everybody have?

My sandbed is only a little more than 2". Still the LTA was able to buried itself in the sand and stayed in the same spot for the past 3 weeks. My plan is to add another inch of sand on top of the existing sand bed within the next couple of weeks. I will post pictures of the progress and hope the OP does as well to show if and when fading occurs on these blue LTAs.

I've always provided a DSB of at least 4", and usually 5-6"
I'm a firm believer in deep, 5"+ or shallow, 1" or less, and w/ sand dwellars I go deep.

sand bed covers a 71" x 17" area and varies from about 2.5" where the purple H. malu is dug in, 4.5" where the LTA is and 6" at the end where the 3'+ mangrove trees are rooted in.

i'll try feeding it squid if it'll go for it and or sandwiching spirulina powder (brings out blues), in the food. maybe soak in selcon too. i intuitively think if a natural color it's analogous to T. croceas wild colors and patterning which really only develop on the reefs and are difficult to impossible to replicate in home aquariums lacking hours of direct sunlight. such may be crucial to keep these LTA's blue? magenta tentacle ends of my purple H. malu routinely get more vivid and extend a cast of the color much further down the tentacles during extended daylight hours/direct sunlight in summer. i could be over thinking this and way off base.

BTW, Dr. Mac had a red LTA last spring long enough to be marked down to a reasonable $$. thought about it but never saw one first hand and reminded me of my rbta when not bubbled which looked like a bunch of earth worms. i don't know, now that i've seen shutiny's and aperc's maybe i should kick myself for not buying it. i really favor blue but the odds are seemingly against it so assuming it plays nice with the sebae anemone we'll see if it turns out to be all for naught.

AQUASD has 2 red LTAs that are stunning, but like $150
Still have your Malu?
I'd love to see pics, that's what I'm looking for myself right now.

I thought I would put up a pic of my purple tip lta.

thx bill, i did manage to get six hours of sleep, i'll try for eight tonight. wishful thinking, lol.

just took this of the sebae anemone H. malu -

and it's second day in my tank at around 2"ø -

o.k., i caught the clownfish ducking into the LTA when the tang swam to close for comfort, it hangs in the H. malu most of the time.
i gave the blue LTA a small morsel of table shrimp last night around 2:00am with lights out. was thinking sleeping fish won't steal it's food. the oral disc measured a flexed 6"ø before eating and 7.5"ø shortly after, so i haven't had to rearrange the rock work for a suitable location.

curious, anyone here have some kind of time line pix of blue color loss?

Nice, like the Malu.
I like the LTA posted too, and those white stridations.
My blue LTA I only have pics of it on the way out.
My LFS has a nem very similar to yours when small, but it didn't have the rings as malus are supposed to have.

thx, it doesn't have whie rings around the tentacles, not all malu's exhibit them.
there's a purple malu with what looks like lighter colored bands at AQUASD but the mouth is somewhat agape and i think $179 is high. however divers den had a spectacular ~12" malu/green oral disc and purple tentacles/white bands for +$200 which sadly didn't make it for the woman who purchased it. that was the most expensive one i've seen.
my malu was selling for $50 but given to me by the lfs owner in trade for nice size a plate of porites latistella coral. purple malu's on divers den adv. $75 - $125, the +$200 one was exceptional.
it's so sad when the big extraordinary anemone species don't make it. problem is even a small specimen could have been larger and currently in declining health. as many of us have found, unless you're lucky enough to observe them for a few weeks and even then, it's always going to be a gamble regardless of how good they look.

Yeah, I saw those at aquasd, and I was close to purchase, but 1, they were small, scared my clowns might beat em up, and 2, he called them morphs, wasn't certain they were malus, and I absolutely want a sand dwellar, and was unsure of a morph.
Next day my friend ID'd as malu, he's more in tune, I'm green when it comes to the Malu ID.
I keep looking, and it ticks me I can't find one right now.

This is a blue LTA I got 3 weeks ago from aquasd.com. It was pretty much an impulse purchase because I have not seen ones in that color before. I really hope the color does not fade because it looks great right now when the tentacles are extended. If it fades, time to go get a blue or red carpet.

Well, looks like I joined the blue LTA project.
Just picked this up from Eric this am.
It's a bit bleached, but that's typical of these guys after transport.
I'll be anxious to see what it colors up like.

good to have you on board.
mine moved early thursday 2:00am. i guided it to a rock cave at the rock/sand interface, been there ever since. i feed it a small piece of table shrimp after lights out thursday evening. was it's third feeding so far.

Nice, I just did a long drip acclimation of mine.
Stuck him where I thought he'd be cool, and he already dug in and set foot w/in about an hour, seeing that as a good sign, even though it's pretty bleached.

Dav or Marc, Do you have updates on these LTA's? I just picked one up at an LFS this weekend and would like to know what to expect on color.

Thanks in advance!
