Blue Striped or Clarkii?

I am talking about 37% solution of Formaldehyde aka Formalin in the US. For a 1 hour bath Noga recommends 125-250ppm=0.47 to 0.95 ml formalin/g. :)

Here's the product he bought....

http://www.aq-products.com/APpro/formalin.htm

It says to dose 1cc for every 18 gallons.
At twice the recommended dosage I use Formalin III at 10cc for every 10 gallons.

Obviously you are right and I am wrong here but more importantly it appears that the formaldahyde concentration actually dosed is probably about the same (if someone wants to do the math.) I've apparently been buying a lot more water!

I just got a PM and wanted to clarify something publicly. Just because I argue or disagree with another member on this or any other forum does not mean I do not respect them.
To put this into perspective:
I have a lot of experience with clowns, but Marina is one of the people on this site I look up to and have learned a lot from.

I thought our discussion was quite productive and civil?.. I had no problem with it, did someone else?

Not I. I didn't even know what you guys were talking about...I had to read it over and over. hahahhaha

I do appreciate the both of you chiming in and advising on how to rescue them. I've always wanted to have a "paired" of these. So, I will do anything with hope that they will make it.

No. It was more like who to listen to regarding clowns. I think I generally give pretty good advise, but I wanted to make clear that if I were the one looking for advise and Marina was posting one thing and WDLV was posting another that I would be listening to Marina. LOL

Since we're on the topic...

Marina, I give them a formalin "bath." I'm presuming you "dip" yours.

For those who don't know, the difference is the duration. A dip is done outside the tank for a few minute to maybe an hour. A bath is where you dose the quarrantine/hospital tank. When you're discussing formalin it's not like dosing copper because copper is cumulative. The more you add the more remains and you really should be testing it. With formalin it's different because it evaporates.

Let's assume that I decide to use the "dip" method. Can I dip them and place them back in my sump? Repeat the dipping process every other day? Will this work? Or it will be more effective with a "bath?"

What's their breathing rate?

I would stick them in a QT with 1.009 sg in any case. Give them 1 hour dip in Formalin, and off they go to a qt. Tomorrow is another day. You can dose Formalin tomorrow in a qt at a lower dosage depending on the progress.

I'm still at work, but when I saw them this morning they are not "gasping" for air. I will DEFINITELY follow your guidelines.

Day 5...

Breath per min from the big 1 is approximately 135.

Started my first Formalin dip tonight.

This is how they look at the initial start.

What I notice during the treatment were:

1. Both of them seemed to be really calm.
2. Heavy breathing did slow down.
3. The dorsal, pelvic fins, and tail on the large one open like normal.

They are in their QT holding right now. Will repeat treatment again in 48 hours (Friday).

Wish me luck guys/gals.

Those are spectacular! Hope they pull through for ya! It's day 4 right? You probably have a fighting chance with them if that's the case.

Thank you and I do hope they do as well.

I received them on Saturday (Jan 23rd) morning at 10:45AM. Today, would be the 5th since their arrival.

FWIW, I like to swap tanks once a day during treatment to remove the fish from the dirty water. I don't always do it, but I do if I have a really sick fish.

The current QT holding is 10gallons of water. I was thinking of changing 2 gallons each day. Would this work as well?

This is not the same thing. You're talking about a water change. I'm talking about switching systems. Water and all. I bleach the tank I'm not using and set it up at the same temp for the next day.
The objective is to get rid of any pathogen not attached to the fish.

I never considered doing it while I was dipping a fish but I think that would be an excellent time to do it since you already have the fish in another reservoir full of super concentrated medication.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned it. For now I would just take the idea and store it in the back of your mind for a later date. Just get accustomed to what you're doing right now.

That's what is needed to be done, once stonecold has 2 QTs running. My plan would be to add copper to the existing QT tonight with SG of 1.009 (which is what it is right now) and let them sit till tomorrow.

After another dip tomorrow, they should go in the second QT with new water with copper dosed again.

Formalin dips+lower SG+copper should have most parasites under control.

PraziPro is to follow shortly.
