I agree with the sentiments exressed by the thread starter. The bluish tinge of some lighting looks completely un-natural. Yeah, I'm well aware that little glass boxes aren't natural either, but shouldn't we be striving to make the over-all aesthetic to be as natural in appearance as possible. Really impressed with Julian Sprung's tank in this regard. And yes, I know his halides had not come on during filming!

I think do what YOU like for your own tank, dont worry about others. If it were to be natural only corals and fish from one area should be in the same tank.

I hate the look of bare bottom tanks, especially when they don't have any liverock at all. It just makes no sense to me, it's not natural at all. Seriously to each his own.

Aside from the color of your tank being a personal preference I think it has a lot to do with how corals are marketed these days. A vast majority of corals sold today are sold under LEDs, these may be anywhere from 20k to pure actinic in their spectrum but very few vendors sell coral under a 10k light, which I think looks very natural. On top of that I think we all keep corals for the color. So why not keep them in similar conditions that we purchased them in, even if it supports false ads, so we get what we pay for. I have knowticed that we keep corals in 20-30k light these days while 5 years ago it was 10-14 and maybe 20k if you we're a unique reefer. I like 20k tanks because its not too blue with a lot of color. I have seen a lot of brown and green tanks in my day under yellow lights and don't think that is what we're spending our money to get.

You can still have colorful Sps under 10k lamps. If you corals look brown under 10k they weren't really colorful to begin with and the actinic lighting was giving a false representation. I understand where he's coming from but maybe he shouldn't had started an entire thread on the subject and just kept it to him self. People will never respond well to this kind thread.
Sounds like you should donate your tank and everything in it and stick to diving.
You add a skimmer, LEDs, controller, dose all kinds of chemicals, put fish in your tank that come from different parts of the ocean, same with your corals and live rock, all to get the best looking tank you can.
You are trying to replicate the eco system not the colour.
Throw up a pic of your tank and we will compare it to some of the tanks with a blue hint to it.
You add a skimmer, LEDs, controller, dose all kinds of chemicals, put fish in your tank that come from different parts of the ocean, same with your corals and live rock, all to get the best looking tank you can.

The tripping on acid makes the corals even better with the blue so your half right, clearly the 3D glasses won't work. I can't see how disco fits with reef tanks?
