Blue throat trigger with shrimp?

Thanks. I'm not sure I want to risk it now. I'm having a hard time finding a centerpiece fish, either they aren't compatible with something in my tank, get to big, or cost too much.

Good possibility that it will, but at the same time it could work. I know several people that have had blue throats and cleaner shrimp together for over 5 years. I do know that they gobbled up the peppermint shrimp, but not the cleaners. I think if you kept him well fed and not stressed, you will have a better chance. Personally, I had a 6 inch blue throat with 3 cleaners and they got along fine for 2 years. My blue throat jumped out of the tank one day before I was able to save him.

Been keeping one male with two skunk cleaners for almost two and a half years. Also keeping a black dog face puffer with them and had no issues yet.

No issues here. My BT pair haven't been with my shrimp long, though. So there's no telling.

I caught my male BT swimming up to my Cleaner shrimp and getting cleaned on several occasions...

I've been doing this for 10 years and I always have Triggers and Cleaner shrimp together. Mine always get cleaned by the shrimp. I have never had issues. It could for sure happen, but so far so good for me.

Some may disagree with me, but I think the bluethroat will get too big for your tank. Aside from being a problem for the fish, it just makes the tank look smaller.

What other fish do you have? Maybe we could suggest something else.

There are photos on RC of cleaner shrimp with queen, clown, blue line, pink tail, niger triggers.....just search cleaner shrimp trigger. I've had them together for over a year in the past. The triggers that have always gone after the cleaner shrimp are the Rhinecanthus genus and the undulated.

Right now I have a blue and yellow tang, flame Angel, fairy wrasse, clown fish, purple firefish

I have or had every trigger possible...they will all eat any shrimp when they feel like it...last week I sold 7 of my trigs but prior to that I had 15 in my big tank...I would add cleaner shrimp (a dozen or so) twice a year..the shrimp learn to venture out after dark and some would clean from tight crevices with the trigs actually laying on the rock to get cleaned...but trigs are predatory fish...I never had a problem with them eating the shrimp as it is a nutrious snack and allows the trigs to act like the preds they are...the longest I have kept the shrimp was under a year and the saw their friends get picked off and kind of gave up on the cleaning...they did have eggs constantly during this period but they too were eventually eaten...

the only trig I have not had is rhinecanthus abyssus...but in 30 years of having and studying trigs I have never even seen one in the hobby...

I agree.

Having them in a smaller tank would also increase the chance of having the trigger eat the shrimp.

By any chance does anyone have any other ideas for a "centerpiece" fish? Maybe an emperor Angel, another tang of some sort? If one of the fish started to get to big for my tank I wouldn't have any problem upgrading in a few years to accommodate it :).

My wife really likes the cleaner shrimp so I'm not sure yet if I should take a chance with the trigger eating it. Judging by the responses, it's about a 50/50 shot with the trigger so it's a tuff decision.

I'd skip the emperor angel. IME, most planned upgrades never happen. It's better to get a fish that will fit in the tank you have. If you upgrade later, you can then get a new centerpiece for the larger tank.
