Anybody kept Chaetodontoplus caeruleopunctatus aka Bluespotted angel in a reef tank before... Are they Reef-safe? Or depends one individual fish too... Saw one recently...

Thankz...

I had one in my softie reef (leathers, GSP, shrooms, xenia) and he didnt touch anything. I only had him a month or so before he fell victim to my asfur angel who never appreciated his presence. They dont hold up to aggressive tankmates IMO. Take care in selection of this fish as ALL of them come from the Phillipines and most are imported in very poor shape. Pictures do not do this species justice, they are just beautiful.

Here is my pair. Right now they are in a FO, but it will be a reef. So we will see. I've heard they are pretty reef safe for an angel.

How long have you had them?

Would you mind telling me where you got them and how much they cost? They are very nice.

LisaD: I've had them about two months. They were each kept at the LFS for about 6 months before I got them, and paired them, so I know they were in good shape. I'll just say that I think $149 is WAY too much. The owner is a good friend of mine so he gave me a good deal. I think they were getting some more in. If you really want one PM me for the contact.

I can hardly find any info on this fish. Even in Scott Michael's book they state that the biology of this fish is poorly known.

Nice pic there LA, I agree that $149 is pretty steep for this fish, but then again Marine Center is on the pricy side. All of these fish come out of the Phillipines (mostly Cebu) so cyanide is a distinct probability. I paid around $35 for mine but he didnt last and was probably ill cared for from the start.

Here is the best frontal picture I could get. I waved my hands like I was going to feed. These guys are really healthy and eat anyting. The big one loves Spectrum pellets.

I don't. They had a small and a large so I took them both. Put them together and they get along great. Are they a "True" pair? Who knows? So little is known about this fish, but I figured if they continue to get along there is a possibility.

Oh... It seem they can tolerate each other's presence... Maybe is a pair... Any differences on the color and body?

No real difference in body color. Quite a few marine species don't have any physical difference readily identifiable as male or female. They tolerate each others presence extremely well. They will have some small squabbles with other fish, but are very gentle with each other.

i have a gray poma angel, which is the same genus and looks very similar.

in my "reef", i have a favia coral, a millepora fire coral, and a montipora cap coral. i also have a few sporadic zoanthids. so far, he has not picked on anything. i've had him about 2-3 months. he's a very hardy and nice fish- eats right from my fingers, no aggression, and just a cool fish.

i don't know how he would do in a full on sps reef. the lfs i bought it from said they become more reef hungry as they get older. so far, that hasn't been the case.

i paid about $60 for him i think.

i hope this helps some...i have a pic in my gallery i believe.
see ya,
toonces

I have seen them in the lfs in my area from $60 to $80. I had one 1.5 years ago until I had to break down my tank due to a move. It was a model citizen.
