"Bonsai Reef" (SPS style)

Your scape looks great. I have been eagerly waiting for the CeramEco rock to launch the "wall" version. I hate my scape - done largely to cover the two overflows in my tank. When the CeramEco wall comes out - problem solved (at least I think) ...then a bonsai or two ....

Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks, I didn't know they were coming out with a wall version. My tank is not drilled, so no built in overflows. I'm using the lifereef overflow. I like the fact that I can periodically remove it for cleaning. Something that I wouldn't be able to do with the built in type.

Time for my 3 month update:
What's changed? Well, I couldn't leave well enough alone and switched to all LEDs cold turkey. I figured some of the coral were already browned out from all of the instability I've put them through so I might as well change the lighting and have them start acclimating to the leds. So far so good, I'm getting great polyp extension and colors are still slowly improving. Most browned out SPS are showing color on the new growth (I'm taking that as a good sign). I haven't had any bleaching and I'm getting a lot of encrusting at the base of everything. So here are a few updated photos:

What did I switch to?
AI Hydras (4 units)

Here's how they look over the tank:

Yup..all those corals are super brown. Hand em over and I'll color them up for you...or kill them.

Looks epic. Would love to come home to that everyday.

LOL, seriously though, some of them are brown. Now that I'm thinking about it, all the ones that browned out were the maricultured stuff I had bought. I've read to just give them time and they'll come back.

Thanks, I wish it looked as clean as that coming home everyday. I scrape algae on the front twice a week and the whole tank gets a scrub down usually once a week.

very very nicely done.

Thanks!

Great color. Can't wait for another 3 month update.

Thanks, hopefully things keep improving

How are you liking the hydras?

Hydras are really good so far. The biggest thing for me is they are so adjustable as far as color, I think I like it one way and after a couple of days I think I want to tweak color another way. I'm trying to train myself to just leave it alone (very hard).

Nice Todd that is a nice clean looking tank. Between you and Karl I don't know who's tank is cleaner lol. I'm gonna have to actually start cleaning my tank once in a while

If I missed it I apologize, but what did u use to mend the rocks together and where did u get it? And how long did it take to cure/harden?

Thanks Franky, I might be even with Karl in the cleanliness department, but he's got me beat by far as far as coral goes. His colors are great and he's been growing and fragging for quite a while. And give yourself some credit, from what I've seen your tank is looking pretty slick too.

Pallobi, there isn't any actual rock in the entire tank. It was all done using Cerameco's VidaRock, which is actually a very porous inert clay material. I used various shapes and just kind of locked them all together. No epoxies or glues were used. On a side note, if you were wondering, this material does not leach any phosphates or bad stuff that would be a no no for reef tanks.

looking very well, do you predict a full reef in ~2years?....... I do.

Hi Chriskid, that's the plan, hopefully. I'm like you and have been very hesitant about LEDs, but figured now was as good a time as any. I still have my doubts, but have been happy in the short term so far. If I can get the incredible growth you've gotten, (but with LEDs), I would be VERY happy. You seem to grow acros like weeds.

May I ask where you got this material and would u mind sharing your cost? It's wonderful looking
