Bonsai Tree inspired Aquascape

Love it! I too liked the look of the sand better, but its still beautiful as is. Perhaps if you filled the bottom of the tank with zoo's and various lps that would be a nice alternative to sand?

I am beginning to dislike the sand in my display too. It is too fine and it blows all over things. If anything I think I'm going to switch to a coarser grain.

I have been thinking of going to a bigger gain of sand in my tank too. I think with your sweet aquascape and no sand it looks more modern.

Crazy,

I was wondering if the load was gonna be somewhat too heavy for the SSB. Sohals and LAs can be pigs. Tank looks great though. In a few months the bottom will be covered in coraline...you have an advantage in not using Starboard because of the way you anchored your rock. I think you will find coraline sticks much better to glass than SB as well.

You all have excellent points, scaryperson27 you are correct I used the sand to emphasize the scape and add depth of the tank. However I do not want to use starboard.

cecilturtle, Yes the Tangs and Angel are a heavy load and was contributing to the monthly siphon. I will eventually find these guys a new home and place back sand in my display.

hatfielj, I have a feeling I will eventually miss sand in my system and will try a more coarse grain as well.

Thanks guys!

ever thought of trying ceramic/marble tiles? I use black/grey marble tiles on the bottom of my tank. It becomes encrusted very quickly and the aesthetics are very pleasing IMO. There are many different possible color/texture combination. Coarse grain will trap detritus worse than a SSB. My aquascaping is nowhere as artful as yours, but you can kind of get an idea of what the bottom looks like...

You aquascaping really looks great!

Just wondering if it stresses the fish, when they the are forced to sleep in the open?

I think Crazy had posted previously that his tangs sleep under the overhang. My tangs do the same at night. All others seem to find crevices in the rockwork after lights go out.

Yes he did, they don't have any other place to sleep. I was just wondering if that causes stress in the long run.

I like the little branch you have. Black sand is sweet..I had a little tank in the kitchen with black sand and everyone liked it. I tried to make as many caves and hiding places as possible. Most ofl my fish sleep at nite. I will wake up and not see any fish.

Looks awesome Thor!

Everything has really started to grow in great. I didn't see the Blueface in that last set of pics, did he start to nip?

The Blue face was surprisingly a model citizen with my corals but unfortunately almost regretfully found all my large fishes new bigger homes. I decided to take out all the large fishes and place a school of Red Spot Cardinals, my LFS was able to get me 7 of them I want to get more. I also decided to place sand back in, without it the tank looked too 2 dimensional and took away the depth of the tank when looking at it from the front.

Thanks for all the compliments and sorry for late responses, stunreefer I appreciate you looking out for me and answering questions I cant get to promptly. Pics to come soon.

Thor :D

I agree with you about possible stress of fish. Question is, how do you know? How can you isolate that variable?
I would bet the fish eventually adapt to habitat.

On a lighter note, I hope that's you in your avatar. Nice gatt. Tell us about it

I think a big indicator of stress would be loss of appetite then weight loss and or Ich. None of my fishes shown any of these symptoms, they were quite happy to see anyone come close to the tank. I think after feeling no threat for awhile they adapted well to the open scape.
