Boyds Chemi-clean

Seriousnaps, there are many of us who do know what we are doing, have very nutrient-poor water, and still get cyano. I have had many experienced reefers look at my tank, and we are all baffled as to why I have cyano.

My tanks has

PO4 = .1
Nitrate and Nitrite = 0
Amonia = 0
Flow is 26.7x
Bulbs are all less that 6 months old.

I have ran Black Diamond carbon, and iron based phos removers for years.

I do water changes religiously. Normally 4% about every 4 to 5 days, and 30% change at least once a month.

Oh I have also done complete substrate changes twice in the last 6 months.

DrBDC,

I think I miss-typed that.

PO4 is .01. That is the lowest reading on the Seachem test before 0.

Curious, how much flow would you recommend? Most people I have talked to think I have a very high flow rate.

I still have a mix of softies in my tank and I'm running 2 1500 seios with a mag 9.5 (only getting 600) on the main. This is on a 70 which puts me over 50X.

You may have a high velocity flow if you use powerheads such as maxijets with a small output nozzel vs. large outputs i.e. seio, tunze, vortechs.

On the phosphates though, you def. need to try and have 0 show since even at that level you have a lot still. Our tests only test the inorganic phosphates.

I'm curious though on your levels. From the signature you have a larger fuge and sump than display like I do. Do you have significant macro growth?

DrBDC,

my flow may be higher than I quoted. I alway estimate conservitively. I don't believe that most powerheads actually put out what they claim. My main pump puts a minimum of 600gph through my 43 gallon display tank. I really have no way of measuring the flow. I added a second U-tube to my overflow, and it is totally maxed out. I could believe that is is actually 700 to 800 gph, but I'm honestly just guessing at that.

All that then flows into my fuge. The drain from my fuge is split with a small amount going into my crytic fuge and the rest straight to the sump.

Yes, I do get pretty good growth from my grape calurpa. I trim it back to about half ever month removing a gallon container full.

My power heads are the high-velocity type. I have 2 at the top of the tank that are rated for around 300gph, but I estated the actual output at 200gph. I also have a powersweep powerhead mounted right above the sand bed to keep flow there. It's rated at 260gph, but I estimated it at 150gph.

I used Chemi Clean many times and have since they invented the stuff. I doubt it harms anything. If it did my reef would not be three decades old. Is it natural? I have no Idea. Are Polyfilters, carbon, ASW and Kalk natural? I doubt it. Chemi Clean is a tool like a powerhead is a tool. My reef gets some cyano, not a lot but it gets it. It does not bother me much but I am sure that in all those years there is a lot of stuff in there that is just not going to be siphoned out. Is my reef overcrouded? yes it is. Stuff has been growing in there all of this time, do I overfeed? yes.

Why? because I have some animals like a moorish Idol which I want to feed three or four times a day as an experiment. Why?
because this is a hobby and I can.
I also feed my fish bananas and avacados, why? because they live between 12 to 18 years old and spawn all over the place.
If your reef is old and healthy enough you will get cyano and probably hair algae. It is not a disease and will not harm anything directly. Chemi Clean helps eliminate it as will removing all of your rocks, cleaning under them and changing the water.
Not likely going to happen in an old very healthy reef tank.
There are plenty of pictures in my gallery, see if it looks like the Chemi Clean hurt anything.
Have a great day.
Paul
ps. I do not work for Chemi Clean

Hows this

I'm not saying to use the stuff, But this reef was started in 1972, Chemi Clean was used many times.

And there is no antibiotic in it.

Look in my gallery and see if you see any damage caused bu the stuff.

I don't know why some people can not have an adult conversation without feeling they have to attack everyone. Oh well.

Beautiful tank Paul!!!!

It looks real clean in the picture, In the tank it is covered with coraline algae and I can't tell what the hell it is. I don't remember either. I think I built that bottle to look like that but I don't ususlly use beer bottles. I only use the finest liquer in my reef, no cheap beer.

i have used it for 10 years dosed in that time 5-7 times double dosed each time to clear up just a small patch to nip it in the bud so to speak worked everytime, exept last month on brown slime and it actually went away 3 weeks later so who knows.

i have never lost livestock of any kind

there is no cure all for cyano and why it appears is usually due to water quality but not always. i keep my water as good as i can and sometimes its just the water chemistry itself that can bring it on. I have done things as small as adding carbon and have seen it start go figure

since we dont have a definitive cause or cure ill still use chemi clean when needed and still practice good housekeeping skills
