Brackish?

do a mud flat biotope...MUDSKIPPERS!!! or maybe instead of sticks, get actual mangrove trees.

I'll pile on with Runner - I've had Bumblebee gobies before, in a sort-of-planted freshwater tank, and they turned out great. When I decided to bag my freshwater habit in favor of saltwater, I moved them over to the reef tank and they did great.

I very much support your brackish notion, presuming you put Bumblebees in. But no Bumblebees and I think it means we're enemies or something. :)

Also check EBay for mangroves. I found a bunch there for cheap a few years back.

I too have seen mangroves on eBay on occasion. liveaqueria.com also has 6"-8" red mangroves in stock for $10.

sr3w-Bumblebees do rule!

My reef was brackish for years before salt became available.
The main problem for me was that there is a limited amount of animals available for it. There are only about five that I can think of commercially available. Scats, mono's, bumble bees, mudskippers and mollies. These fish (except for the bumble bees are very hardy and you almost have to step on them to kill them.
