Breaking all the rules. 120 anemone+clownfish build

elegance coral

They call me EC
I have already started the build. I've had a haddoni for....... I forgot how may years now. For about the past 6 months or so, its been living in a 40 breeder with a gigantea. They seem to be getting along fine. On Sunday, I moved them to the 120. I put a pillar in the center of the tank to house a magnifica. I wasn't planning on getting the mag for several months, but I went to my LFS tonight.:hmm3: You know its happened to you too.:lol2: I brought the mag home, turned down the flow, and held it on top of the pillar for a minute or two. It attached and seems to be doing as fine as can be expected for such a short time in the tank.

I have a breeding pair of perculas. The female is from the Picasso bloodline and the male is wild caught. They actually laid a clutch of eggs less than 24 hours after being moved to the new tank. I plan on raising a clutch of little ones and adding a relatively large group to the tank. I'm not gonna add 27, but maybe a dozen or so.

So..... I'll have three different large host species of anemone and a group of clowns in the same tank. I wouldn't be attempting this if I didn't have other systems in my fish room, I can move critters to if thing go wrong.

Here's a couple of pic's.

Right end view before moving critters over.

Nice!

I've had gigs and haddoni's flop on top of each other like it's no big deal. They didn't mind touching each other at all. The one time I tried mixing mags with gigs, the mag kept deflating with-in days of adding the gig, and that's after a perfect run of ~9 months maybe with a mag, and doubling in size with the mag. I gave it away. I've had mixed luck with mixing, but I've got gig/mertens/sebae/pizza mixed right now-all's good. I've got a LTA that doesn't like the mix, so it's in a different system. BTA makes every one else mad (It's with the LTA).
I know you've got the experience to figure it out, hope it works better for you! Keep us posted!

Where the hell are you going??? I go to UCF and am always out and about throughout Orlando (east-side, downtown and west-side) and have never seen a Ritteri before like yours, especially with a purple column. Great find and I'll be watching this thread. I'm not jealous or anything.

The mouth is saying, "Hey look I am closed".

Looks great!!

Good luck with the new tank!
Aaron

Thanks. It seemed to look okay at the LFS, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Only time will tell I guess.

Nice!

I mixed a gigantea with a magnifica before without issue, but the gigantea was a little fella at about 3 or 4 inches across. The magnifica was about a foot across. I've seen others on here with mag's and gig's in the same system, so I was kinda hopeful. Your experience, and the fact that the mag released from the rock over night and was just laying on the bottom when I got up, is causing me to rethink my plan. I set up this system just so I could have this combination of anemones. If it doesn't work out, I'll be really really ticked off. LOL.

LOL. Thanks.
I shop in Lakeland. I got the haddoni from Nolan's. I got the gigantea and magnifica from Studio Aquatics. Studio Aquatics even has a mag, like the one I just got, in their display tank that has split. Now it's two little mag's about 3 or 4 inches across. They're not for sale though.

WOW nice, I plan to do something similar with my 90! We def need more pics with nems in the tank.

Going a bit OT, I'll be in Orlando on Saturday and might have a chance to check out some LFS while there, any good ones to hit?

EC - let us know how everything turns out. Are you running carbon at all? Could that help with potential chemical warfare?

There are a number of lfs, but world wide corals is the must see without a doubt...they are incredible(they did just set up a small nem tank with "rare" nems)...their chalice collection is one of best in the U.S., their acros are crazy...they keep 10-180 frag tanks, plus a 500 gal fish system, plus like four display tanks(with one being as nice as I've ever seen)

You must check this place out!

EC-looks like a sweet build! And isn't that subconsciously why we go to the fish store. That is the most exciting part of this hobby, spotting the new critter and bringing them home

Buckeyetodd nailed it on the head. World wide corals is amazing. Generally speaking there many decent LFS around but I would check them out for sure.

Thanks. I'll take some more pic's this weekend.

Things aren't going so good though. One of the halides went out, and it will probable be a few days before I have time to deal with it. It lights up, but only puts out a small fraction of the light it should. I don't know if it's the ballast or bulb. I also think I jumped on the mag a little prematurely. I like to observe a mag, in the store, for a few days before I buy it, but I didn't do it this time. You know how they can look great one minute and half dead the next. This one didn't look great in the store, but it was in a small cubical of a large fish system. Low light and flow. I figured it may perk up if I got it into a better environment. Well, it has continued to go down hill. I'm planning a large water change this weekend, but I don't know if the mag will hang on that long.

Great find! I have a pedestal in the middle of my tank waiting for something like that! One thing though, you might consider using the tank as a grow out tank and sell clowns off as it gets crowded. You can always remove clowns but it is difficult to add any.

Looks good, best of luck. Don't you already have a large establish mag though. I remember a very pretty black clarkii clown being pictured with it several times if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe a little late but, Sea in the City is a great little shop.

I'm not sure if it helps much or not but I do run lots of carbon just in case. I have two canisters, similar to the ones on RO/DI filters, but they have 3/4" plumbing connections. I run them in series. The first one is full of carbon and the second one has GFO in it. I empty out old DI cartridges to hold the media. I typically do large water changes as well. Usually around 50% +/-. In this system, I'll probably be doing 55gl water changes.

Thanks. Ya, that's definitely a big part of it. After you've been in the hobby for a long time, you're supposed to have more self control than that. I haven't quite mastered this part of the hobby though.:spin1: When I see that special critter at the LFS, I'm like a kind on Christmas morning.:eek2:

Thanks for stopping by my thread. I got the inspiration for much of this system from your tank. BTW, it's time for an update in your thread. LOL.

That's a great idea. When I moved stuff over to this system, I freed up some space in my fish room for raising clowns. Not allot though. Using the display as a grow out tank will definitely save me some space. It'll look cool too.
