Breeding Clowns

Recently ive wanted to see if i could breed a pair of clown. They seem to pair up, as there always together. One is larger (female). I havent had them very long but am in the mix of starting them up a breeding tank. So this is what i have so far.

35 gallon tank
sand substrate
Aqua clear 300 HOB filter
bubble wall mounted under the 200 watt heater. ( i heard they needed the extra oxygen)
few pounds of live rock
Normal output lighting (florecent)2- 48 inch bulbs 40watts each one is 20,000k and other is attinic)

Ok so thats about it so far. Now i have a couple questions.

1. Do you think i need a skimmer?(the 2 clowns would be alone in the 35 tank.)
2. Would an anenome help?
3. IS that enough lighting for an anenome?

Any reading material (links) that you know of would help out a lot.

hi Joey From kingston I live very close to you on Grindstone Island near Gananoque but in New York. is there a Saltwater fish store in kingston?


You dont need an anemone for clowns to spawn, and i dont think you have enough light to sustain one.

A skimmer could not hurt, but if you keep up on water changes and dont have corals you dont need it.

as for extra oxygen i think a powerhead placed near the top of the tank to increase flow and surface agitation could provide oxygenation, maybe better.

Ya there's a couple stores around. I actually deal with a guy from Gan. who sell saltwater stuff. With real good prices, if your interested. Jims the owner.

I don't know if you can make clown fish breed. I think you just have to have the right set up and wait for it to happen and be lucky. I have a pair that are now 2 years old and my tank has been setup for only 2 years also, they have been together since we started the tank which is a reef 75 gallon. I would put a flat piece of shale rock up next to the side of the tank and pray that they would adventually lay there. Mine laid twice on some live rock before i put in a piece of shale rock under my big power head, which also has an anemone living right next to the shale rock. Now my pair have laid 15 times on this same piece of shale rock but I have not gotten any of the babies to live longer than 2 weeks which is very discourging but my lovely wife insist that we keep trying. We are growing rotifers, shrimp and trying to grow green water but have found it a lot easier to buy the concentrated bottle of nanno 3600 photoplankton but it is expensive. Good luck. My wife keeps trying but I'm about to give up and grow out some coral to cover her cost on the baby clowns. :eek1:
