Breeding Misbars- yes or no

Would purposely breeding misbared Ocellaris Clownfish generaly be frowned upon? Picassos come to mind. The goal would be to create new styles of misbars similar to Picassos or at least a predictable bar variation.

Not at all,these traits are not inherited (though some people still disagree here).
Don´t be so restrictive.You are lucky if you get a spawning ocellaris pair,normal or otherwise.

Hi Luis, I have seen some photos of juvs from a snowflake pair and almost all of them have those kind of pattern... Maybe there´s some genetics involved.

they are definetly inherited......atleast with snowflakes.

sorry, i agree, misbarring is not inherited, but irregular/picasso barring is definetly. this is very evident with snowflakes as aomont stated.

You are contradicting yourself... I have found that there is a genetic component and an environmental component. Mis-bar to mis-bar caused more broken bar fry in the same environment as regular bar bred to regular bar. I also took a batch of black O's and created nearly 100% mis-bars adjusting environmental factors, ammonia, nitrate, and decreased food quality... This batch came from a pair that produced 100% perfect barred fry when the water parameters were well maintained. I was looking for an all black clown. I got 2 that only had small dots on one side of their tail (third bar) the rest of the clown was jet black. Unfortunatly they were lost to a heater failure...

So, if you are looking to create a mis-bar there is a few variables to look at.

let me rephrase. i think there is a diff btn misbarring and irregular barring.

in my opinion.

misbarring is when the bars are not completly around the body. broken. half stripes etc...

irregular barring is with jigsaw/picassos etc.

i think misbarring has a strong evironmental element but irregular barring has a more genetic one.

If misbars,etc were genetic,we should have by now several established clownfish strains.

Doubt it is genetic too. It's more of an environmental influence. I've worked with blood shrimps. Normal spotted WC adults ended up producing striped juveniles.

That aside, I don't see anything wrong with misbars. It sure beats all the deformed FW fish that are being marketed out there.

i agree misbarring is environ. but irregular strips as in snowflakes/picassos is genetic.

a friend has bred snowflake/perc cross to yield about %40 snowflake hybrids that have very irregular patterns. babies that look almost exactly like my original snowflake pair from england.

When I first started raising Ocellaris 5+ years ago I did get a fair amount of Misbars.
Now I'm lucky to get one misbar out of a batch of 400+ clowns.
I have absolutely no idea what's changed. Do not believe it has anything to do with the parents. My best guess is that Misbarring stopped for me when I changed to IA from live. I wasn't ever very successful getting very dense phyto cultures.

Currently I am regularly hatching from a pair of Stubbed clowns and I have yet to notice any stubbies. But they sure do produce some nice looking clowns.
