Breeding ocellaris and black ocellaris question.

That's an interesting question that I've not heard a definite answer on. The two main answers -> somone here knows someone who has a pair consisting of Reg Ocellaris + Black Ocellaris and claims that the resulting offspring turn out like one or the other parent. The other source I've found would suggest that the offspring are a "continuum" from one parent to the other (W. Mai in Corals Magazine, the Clownfish Issue, is roughly quoted as saying the resultant offspring producing "interesting results").

This has been asked several times here and we still don't really have a solid answer. We have got everything from "some black, some normal" to "all muddy brown". I have a mixed pair like that but so far no spawns. I am tempted to switch out the normal for another b&w but my curiosity is getting the best of me, I haven't done it yet and probably won't.

Just curious, for you science guys, what would you call the offspring? Certainly not a "hybrid" since they are one species. :confused:
 
Actually David, if we were dealing with Cichlids...breeders would still consider the fish hybrids, even though it's a hybrid between races...i.e. Breeding 6 Stripe and 7 Stripe Frontosa together...that's definitely a hybrid...

I asked this question a few weeks ago here and got the same kind of responses, not really sure. My pair regularly spawns and I may just go ahead and try it this spring, one to see if I can even do it and two to see what the results would be...curiosity as well :). I have the opposite as you a Darwin black ocellaris female and a regular ocellaris male, at least that was the overall consensus from my pictures...I was not sure what my pair consisted of.
 
It may be worth trying just once to get several babies to take pics because this question seems to come up again and again. I haven't done a thorough/exhaustive search, but I haven't come up with any pictures of hybrid offspring when I went looking for them.

Yes,as long as Darwins are not described officially as a new species.:)
 
I purchased a small black ocellaris on Saturday and am happy to report they have takin a liking to each other. We'll see what happens in the up coming months.
 
i have two clowns in my tank... they were not bought as a pair, but one is female and one is male... how do i know if they will breed? i really want them to breed but how do i get them to?
 
Soft lights, a good merlot and Barry on the stereo. Works on my wife anyway :rolleyes:

Or you could just maintain pristine water conditions, temps above 80, regular light cycle, no disturbances and feed them to saturation with a high quality and varied diet. That never worked on Mrs M but the fish do seem to respond. :lol:
 
I just got back from Sundance Film f\Festival and while there I couldn't resist the urge to go check out the lfs...

Well, while in there I noticed two really cool looking clowns from across the room. In their display tank they have a pair of Ocellaris that were a result of a Darwin x regular cross. They were very beautiful to say the least. The female basically looked like a very large juvie black o. in that she had a jet black body with orange underside and face. The male on the other hand looked almost like a regular Ocellaris with very very heavy black around the fins and bars.

If anyone can tell me how to post a pic from my phone gallery I will be happy to put em up...

OR, if anyone here lives in SL,UT (he..he...he..) the store I went to is called Fish 4 U, it would be awesome if you could shoot over there and grab a pic for us...
 
i'm going to revive this thread because i'm curious about it..

I've got a regular vanilla orange Ocellaris and a black Ocellaris both as juveniles, and they area already hanging out alot. Anyone have a pic of any offspring from this combo?
