Breeding Ocellaris Clowns - My unexpected attempt!

Hi folks! I'm starting this thread to log the progress of my unexpected breeding of my Ocellaris Clowns. I had no intention of breeding anything at this time but one day last week (approximately Friday, August 22nd, '08) I looked at my tank and noticed my clowns were fanning a bunch of eggs. I'm now officially dragged into the world of "breeding"!

During this thread, I'll be adding excerpts and links to my posts in other peoples threads in an attemp to cover all ground that can hopefully help others if they should experience/attemp breeding clowns. I will also attempt to add photos of the progress along the way.

Thanks to the others who have allowed me to be a part of their threads, I hopefully will have a better head start and hopefully will have more success right out of the gate. Wish us all luck! :fish1:

I orriginally wanted to keep this thread in chronological order but I have too many questions that I need answers to now so here goes:
#1- I have my newly hatched clowns in a 5.5 gal tank with an air stone and somewhat gentle bubbles for circulation. Is this what I should be doing or is this wrong?

#2- The baby clowns seem to be about the same size as BBS and they have similar short jerky movements, many times bacwards. Is this normal?

I do have more questions but I'll start with this for now. Thanks!

#1 sounds perfect.
#2 you mean the size of brine shrimp? Not BBS they are waaay smaller. Short jerky movements is normal. I dunno about backwards lol.

If BBS is the correct acronym for Baby Brine Shrimp, then yes, they are the same size. I'm afraid though that the BBS may become adults too soon and think that my clowns (if that's what they actually are) are food. I think I need a really good magnifying glass because it's hard for me to tell what's what. Thanks!

Subman,

I'm so happy to find your thread today! I too noticed an unexpected spawning with my True Perculas this afternoon! Now, I know that the first spawn is usually unsuccessful, with few eggs & most of them eaten by the parents...but, I had a few questions - maybe we can learn from each other;

1) How did you get your newly hatched baby clowns into another tank? Mine eggs are on THE LARGEST rock in my tank, so I would either have to remove them from the rock or try to catch the larva that hatch in about a week...any pointers?

2) Can an anemone's sting kill the eggs? I've noticed my parents being pretty aggressive towards my rose anemone during spawning.

I'd love to see what everyone things/have experienced.

Thanks!

I don't get it subman.. My fry are say this long -- when they hatch. Newly hatched BBS are only this . big. Are you sure you have clown larvae? :)

Ok, now I'm officially CONFUSED!!! Based on your responses (Everyone) and video (FB), I think I may have mosquito larvae! LOL What I have going on doesn't look anything like the video. Your video actually has things "swimming"! I have little specks that "look like fish" but hang around the bottom and sometimes jump (similar to what I've seen from an adult brine shrimp. And as far as my "BBS", now I'm not sure if they are dead or unhatched eggs or what? I've been taking pictures (as best I can) and will be posting them shortly.

That is exactly what i was thinking, i get them in my snagger from time to time as my reeftank is full of them. You may want to go to a dollar store or something similar and pick up a cheap handheld magnifying glass it will also come in handy for checking on your rotifer cultures. and oh yeah subscribed.

The unknown larvae look like fry to me, although mine aren't that bright orange. Are they realy as tiny as bbs? I thought my maroon larvae were so small.
