Breeding Ocellaris Clowns - My unexpected attempt!

I did lose a quite a few shortly after the transfer but all the ones that are left seem to be swimming happily all over the place. My rotifer density in their tank is very high but now I'm also feeding those rots because of my concern that they all have purged their food and would have no nutritional value and die while in the clowns tank. Because of me feeding them, my clown tank does have a very light green tint. Is this acceptable?

I make my larvae tank very green Subman. I can watch the difference in the feeding when I add phyto. There are different theories on what about the phyto helps them to feed. Possibly a depth perception thing. Who knows but I say make it very green. I probably add a cup of phyto to 5 gallons of water. (that's a guess) I don't see alot of Rots in the water. Maybe its just the pictures. You should see alot of fat silver bellies.

I'm not growing phyto. Instead, I'm using the refrigerated nanochloropsis paste made by FAF (Florida Aquatic Farms). Is this still ok? I thought I read somewhere that this is a good substitute if one doesn't want the hassle of growing algae (like me!).

Here's some Day 3 baby pics: :fish1: :fish1: :fish1:

:fish1: :fish1: :fish1:  Here we go again! My goofballs (clowns) just laid their 4th batch of eggs at 11pm - 9/25/08! Same spot as the last batch.... no, I didn't get tiles back in there :( so I'll be chasing them around for 5 hours again! :hmm5: :spin3: :spin1: :fun5: :spin2:

subman... have been following your thread and i also have the same problem !! My clowns lay their eggs on the rock and in 8 days i am hunting in the dark with my turkey baster !! I have 2 fry that are 2wks old (only got 4 that batch) and about 50 fry that are 3 days old . I think i am getting the hang of this now !

Hi nurseturk! Thanks for following my thread. What actually worked for me this batch was to use a "brine shrimp net" to catch most of them. I did start off with using a container but it only worked if they were near the surface because if they were further down, they would flow out of the container as I ascended to the surface. When using the net, I started to get crazy and try to scoop large quantities at a time but found that I had to move the net quickly so they wouldn't swim out and I think that compromised their health. Many did die initially. After realizing this, I just went after 1 to 3 at a time if they were grouped together and was much more gentle with the net. I also brought the container (4 cup measuring cup with a handle) to the net instead of bringing the net to the cup. I wanted to minimize their exposure time out of water. So far it looks like I still have maybe 2 dozen hanging in there! I'm hoping I will have more success this next batch.

:sad2: Update... Eggs hatched Friday night/Sat morning, no survivors.:sad2: I modified my larvae catcher which did catch a few but due to my hair algae problem, the screen clogged up, lost flow and somehow they just didn't survive. I did get smaller tiles to line their unusual egg laying area so hopefully I'll have better luck with the next batch.

:) :( Well, good news and bad news...
Good news, my clowns just laid a new clutch of eggs in the same spot as last time...
Bad news, I'm an idiot and didn't put any tiles there yet so now I'll be looking forward to yet another sleepless night!

And the WORST news, last night I was feeding my rots nanno paste but accidentally dumped too much in the larvae tank. I scooped some out an diluted the water with new but apparently not enough. I woke up today to a tank with only one little survivor. This was a painful lesson. I had over a dozen that were doing very well and now their gone because I'm an idiot!:(

"now their gone because I'm an idiot!"

Join the crowd. I think we've all made mistakes and killed a bunch of larvae. I know I have.

Been an idiot on many occasions. Don't be too hard on yourself. Your going to do it again. :D

FB- Thanks for the vote of confidence!!! LOL
I was having a very stressful few days which I think contributed to my lack of thinking. This was just the icing on the cake. I now realize that there's no real "fudge factor" with this breeding thing. I'm hoping to be more careful and "NOT" make this mistake again! I think if I just did a heavy water change, the outcome could've been better. Is there an "Idiots Anonymous" program I can join? LOL:crazy1: :hammer:

NWFarmer- I didn't know there was a "snowflake clownfish" so I did a search to see what one looked like and came across this site: www.rareclownfish.com It looks like they may have some useful info. Do you have any pictures of yours?

Well Snowflake is a coloration not a breed so success would be in the eye of the beholder I guess... You could breed 2 snowflakes and get bad coloration but high survival rates or you could get low survival and great colors or a combo of both.

Thats the info Im looking for. As I am a newbie at clownfish breeding are there any books or websites that are full of good info?
